Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Haverford has no fraternities or sororities, and the student body is generally happy about this. In a community that emphasizes being all-inclusive, Greek life would be a visible ideological deviation. Students hold regular Saturday night and frequent Thursday night parties that are open to all who want to come. Some of these take place in the College apartment complexes, but they are most often found in Drinker House and Lloyd dormitory. Drinker House is a residential complex that houses 18 students, and it is the closest thing to a frat on the campus. Traditionally it is occupied mostly by the baseball team. Drinker throws the first big party of the year, First Drinker, as well as a few other big parties throughout the year. When there isn’t a big party going on at Drinker, there will almost always be another party going on somewhere else on campus.

A significant percentage of students never go to on-campus parties, though everyone is invited to them. One of the great things about parties on campus is that there are non-alcoholic options available for non-drinkers. This keeps the pressure to drink off of students, and ensures that everyone can feel comfortable. So while there are no fraternities and sororities, Haverford is not without a social scene. It’s a different scene, somewhat unique, that all who participate in will likely enjoy.

There is no Greek life at...

There is no Greek life at Haverford. We don't have any frats or sororities, but there are still plenty of parties on campus on the weekends. The baseball and lacrosse teams, which both have their own dorms/apartments, host many frat-like parties. It's nice not having any frats or sororities because everyone is allowed to go to every party. It is much more inclusive.

Every sorority and frat is...

Every sorority and frat is different, some more serious than others. However, I am glad that Haverford College does not have the option of joining because it is an unnecessary pressure.
