College Prowler Take

Much of Haverford’s student body, both male and female, is on the socially-awkward side. Everyone is fairly intelligent, but some wear it on their sleeves more than others. Everyone tries to be extremely nice—even those who aren’t the most dynamic. Guys probably tend to be a little more shy than the girls who are pretty cool to just kick back with. Few students consider their peers very physically attractive, though most claim that every incoming class is more attractive than their predecessors. Is the admissions department making a conscious effort to beautify Haverford? Nobody knows. We do know, however, that in a school with only 1,100 people, a few attractive ones can really shift the balance.

Some female students believe in and have met many guys that fit the stereotype of the “Haver-male” who is responsible for a certain percentage of the nation’s population of short people. However, like the women here, men are of all sorts of varieties: athletic, hairy-chested, gentlemanly, and named Dan. You definitely have an interesting choice of mates here at the College, and while the one you end up with might not compare with the pick of the litter at another school, consider that it’s Haverford’s litter you’re picking from.

There is a stereotype that all Haver-guys are socially awkward and unattractive. While this is very true for many, I have definitely met some very attractive, nice guys. I mean, everyone is nice. It's just a matter of getting that person out of their shell. The typical student is somewhat shy, extremely nice, and uniquely quirky.

Girls and guys here are some of the coolest, nicest, and most interesting people I have met. There are a good number of attractive people here, but honestly, we care more about more important things than looks.

In general, the best way of describing us is that we are all closet dorks. That doesn’t mean that people aren’t hot, but not everyone is social in the ‘normal’ sense.

Facts

Birth Control Available?

Yes - Female students can purchase birth control from Student Health Services. Health Services offers all forms of birth control: pills, patches, and the shot. The school bookstore sells condoms.

Social Scene

Haverford students are notorious for being awkward in social situations. It's not an entirely untrue stereotype, but we're probably not as bad as our reputation says we are. Something like a small percent of the campus has a consistent presence at parties. Another small number of students never leave their dorm rooms. In between the two extremes are the larger percent who go to a party every week or so, but aren't averse to staying home on a Friday night if they have work to do or feel like watching a DVD.

Hookups or Relationships?

Yes and yes; you see a good percentage of stable, long-term relationships. Many of these are on campus, some with students at other schools—most notably Bryn Mawr. In the olden days, most Haverford guys would at one point in their college careers date a Bryn Mawr woman, and these courtships frequently culminated in marriage. Times have changed, but you still see plenty of bi-college relationships. As for hookups, they're probably more prevalent than serious relationships, so if you're looking for one, you can usually find it. This can be kind of strange because almost everybody knows everyone else; Haverford is not a place for faceless hookups.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Again, everyone knows everyone else at Haverford, so "meeting" really isn't the issue. That being said, romantic trysts frequently result from living near someone, taking a class with them, or joining a club. People don't really meet at parties, but they're more likely to hook up there.

Dress Code

People go to class in pajamas, sweatpants, and long underwear. Some students dress nicely all the time, but they are a distinct minority. You're more likely to see old jeans and a T-shirt than anything else. For parties, there's a slightly higher incidence of nicely-dressed students, but people frequently come casual. Haverford is definitely a casual school, which is a positive for most who attend—better than watching some self-enraptured Bryn Mawr girl trip in heels and then pretend like nothing happened. Trust me.
