Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Very few Haverfordians frequent Philadelphia’s club scene. It is a hassle getting in and out of town, the clubs are not particularly exciting, and Haverford students aren’t generally the clubbing type anyway. Probably the main reason, however, is that it is easy and cheap to get liquored up on campus, and most students interested in partying take full advantage of this. Haverford has no fraternities or sororities, but on-campus parties are held on a fairly regular basis. On many Thursday nights, there’s a moderately-sized party somewhere in Lloyd dormitory. Lunt basement provides the perfect venue for concerts on Friday nights, and Saturday nights tend to be a big party night at Haverford, too. There is usually at least one big party going on, whether it be at the apartments, in Gummere basement, or at Drinker House. Many of them are small and have themes, making it easier to meet people and have fun.

Don’t get the impression that Haverford students don’t frequent local bars, because the upperclassmen often make appearances at places off campus. The Roach and O’Brien is fairly popular, and so is Brownie’s—a slightly nicer bar in nearby Ardmore, whose claim to fame is a notable performance by Vanilla Ice. Roach and O’Brien on Friday nights would make an interesting anthropological study: About half the people there are Haverford students and the other half are grizzled locals. Usually everyone gets along fine.

The parties are great here, and take part almost exclusively on campus. The college hosts a "dance" once every couple weeks, but every weekend students can listen to music in Lunt, or party in any of the dorms or down at the Apartments. Nightlife is good here, but it's also not invasive.

Haverford is on the rich and...

Haverford is on the rich and suburban Main Line outside Philadelphia, so bars and clubs are few and far between, unless you take the train into the city--then you have everything. That said, nightlife on campus is tons better, but since we are a very academically focused school, the weekend is really limited to Friday and Saturday, sometimes Thursdays. Parties usually consist of beer pong, dance parties at Drinker House or Gummere Basement, or hanging out with friends in someone's dorm room. There's no Greek life, which is a plus. Everything is very chill. People drink and get trashed, and people stay in and watch movies, frequently both in the same night. You want it, you can find it on campus.

The parties on campus are pretty good, but they're usually just low-key parties with a group of friends. There are good concerts at our concert venue, and occasionally there's a dance. Overall, the Haverford party scene is pretty quiet, but usually fun. You don't have to party if you don't want to. There are definitely a lot of people who prefer just hanging out and watching movies or just having a jam session, so you don't always feel the need to get wasted every weekend.

Facts

Club Crawler

The nightclubs in Philadelphia are okay, but few students make pilgrimages to the city very often. One problem is that SEPTA, the suburban train line, shuts down at midnight. Student Council recently funded a bus to make runs in between Center City Philadelphia and Haverford on Friday nights until 2 a.m. This has been fairly successful.

Fluid

Fluid is one of Philly’s newer clubs, and already a venerable place for the city’s hottest DJs. On most nights, the music is heavy on afro-beat, hip hop, and reggae.

Club Flow

Club Flow is housed in an enormous warehouse that was renovated to be cloyingly chic and modern. It’s a bit upscale (and fairly hot right now) so visitors need to dress up a bit. The club put a lot of money into lasers and a huge video screen. It’s not really a student hangout, but a few Haverfordians swear by it. Music is mostly rap and techno.

Blarney Stone

Half Irish pub, half nightclub, this is a popular hangout for University of Pennsylvania students. Blarney Stone isn’t all that different a scene from Brownie’s on the Main Line, but it’s a nice change of pace. Music runs mostly rock and pop.

Roache and O’Brien’s

Roache’s is one of the few neighborhood joints where Haverford students can go to mix with Main Line residents who don’t quite fit into polite society. Roache’s is something of an enigma: it is a bona fide dive in a town where expensive restaurants and upscale baby clothing stores are the norm. This is its charm. They make a great burger and serve good, cheap drinks. The selection isn’t fantastic, but it’s better than most would expect. The staff is usually very friendly and appreciative of Haverford students, who probably spend more time at Roache’s than any other neighborhood bar.

Yeats Pub

Yeats is not too popular for Haverford students, but this pub and restaurant has much to recommend. It is by far the cleanest and best-maintained drinking establishment within a reasonable distance of the school, and the food is truly excellent. It’s also the best place to go for more exotic beers. The crowd is older, though, and students stand out a bit here.

Brownie’s 23 East

Brownie’s is probably the second most popular bar on Lancaster Avenue for Haverford students. The bar frequently hosts local cover bands which are generally pretty good. Whenever there is live entertainment, they usually take a small cover charge. The clientele is almost entirely college-aged, though more students come here from nearby St. Joseph’s University than anywhere else. Drinks are ordinary, but are of a decent value.

Grog Restaurant and Bar

Much more popular among Bryn Mawr students and Villanova students than ‘Fords (if only because of location), the Grog is a step up from Roach’s in terms of ambiance. They also have excellent food; a burger will run a buck or two more here than at Roach’s, though.
