Transportation for Haverford students consists of the SEPTA system (the trains) and the Blue Bus, a free shuttle between Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore that students can take advantage of. The lack of public transit near campus is mostly because there isn't any need of it-everyone is concentrated on or around campus, and other things are within less walking distance than the train station. Students don't seem to mind this, and they find that the SEPTA system is actually rather convenient for trips into the city. It runs trains to and from Philadelphia every half hour or so, and it stops at three convenient stations within Center City.

The cost of a roundtrip ride to Philadelphia on the R5 regional rail line runs between $6 and $8 dollars. This is expensive enough to dissuade most students from making frequent trips. Even more outrageous is the $5 round trip fare to most nearby towns on the Main Line. Local shopping districts and anything farther away are much more accessible with a car. One savvy way to get into Philadelphia is on the R100 light rail line, a recently constructed system that is quiet, cheap, and efficient. The problem is that the R100 drops you off at 69th Street Station in Upper Darby, where you'll need to transfer onto the "El" (Philadelphia's Elevated Train and Subway) for the price of a subway token. So, unless you have a car or can spare a little extra for trips to Philly, get acquainted with the suburb of Haverford, where your feet will get you anywhere you need to go.
