The athletics department at High Point is growing and getting better every year! In 2010, the women’s soccer and volleyball teams both made it to the first round of the NCAA championship. The women’s lacrosse team won the National Lacrosse Conference Championship in its inaugural season. All this plus outstanding years for HPU men’s baseball, soccer, and basketball. Every year, High Point gets better and better and is seen as a contender within the Division I Big South Conference. Students attend sporting events, but they are sadly more likely to attend the men’s sports than the women’s. Although the women’s teams do spectacularly, the men’s sports tend to attract more attention. The atmosphere at games isn’t like at a large school; it’s more personal. Since High Point is a smaller university, there is a higher chance that you actually know the athletes participating. Everyone wants to see their friends do well and that is a major reason people attend the sporting events.
Whether participating or spectating at a sporting event, students are surrounded by state-of-the-art facilities. All of the athletic facilities have either been renovated or are brand-new. They are flawlessly maintained and cleaned, and are absolutely beautiful. The best part about attending games is that it’s free for students! For those students who are so inspired by the athletes, HPU offers a plethora of club and intramural sports. If anything, the intramural sports get the most competitive.
