Good for academics if you are conservative and willing to pay the price

Health & Safety:
I feel incredibly safe on campus. We have a small school and campus and a good security team who is always patrolling it for anything suspicious. There is little to no crime on campus and the dorms enforce safety regulations.

Guys & Girls:
Most people are not only really respectfully dressed, but wonderfully dressed. They really care about their appearance and it's pleasant to constantly be around attractive people. Everyone is also really, really kind and respectful and friendly and intelligent. Seriously. Everyone.

The academics are challenging but absolutely worth it. The professors are all brilliant, and they really care about the students and want us to learn. Listening to many of them speak in class is like standing under an intellectual waterfall and trying to soak it all up. They're all available during offices hours if you need outside help or even would like to talk about anything. The core curriculum is also really good and strengthens students in all areas.

It's Michigan. It is hot and humid from August to October, it snows from November to March, then it gets hot and humid again. As long as you're expecting that and dress appropriately, it's fine. If you like that kind of thing. Most people don't.

Our athletes are amazing, not that anyone acknowledges this or even cares. The administration is hell bent on not giving athletes any kind of advantage which means they work twice as hard as everyone else without much reward. The students simply don't care - atheletes and athletic events are just another reason to have a party and drink drink drink. The facilities are every kind of old, although the school has finally broken down and decided to make some upgrades, which are still in progress.

Guys & Girls:
About 98% of the campus is white, christian, rich, and connected. This means they are also stuck up, hypocritical and obsessed with climbing the ladder (doesn't matter which ladder it is). The other 2% just sits around laughing and shaking their heads.

The drug scene at Hillsdale goes unnoticed by most people. Obviously if you want something, you can find it, but that's true of pretty much everywhere. Also, you never hear of anything hard core like meth or cocaine or stuff like that, just your basic weed or prescription drug abuse. A lot of people on campus smoke cigarettes.

If you are a politics major or you like a challenge, than the academics here are an A+. However, most of the teachers will act like theirs is the only class you should be making time for and are extremely hard on people who may not be particularly interested in what they are teaching. Many teachers are also biased against athletes (who are not given any leeway or allowances despite all the extra work they put into our sports programs). However, every teacher absolutely loves their subject and it is obvious when you get in to upper level classes that they really are good teachers who care about their students.

Hillsdale does not accept any federal money, which means government scholarships are out of the question. However, it is fairly easy for anyone to receive scholarships, and most of the time you don't even have to ask. Since my grades have been steadily inclining, every year I see more scholarships added to my account (I'm up to over $11000) and I didn't have to apply for a single thing!

There are 3 sororities (Pi Beta Phi, Chi Omega, and Kappa Kappa Gamma) and 4 fraternities (Sigma Chi, Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Tau Delta, and Delta Sigma Phi). They will all tell you not to believe their stereotypes, but in reality they are all true. People get involved in Hillsdale Greek Life for two reasons: the political/academic connections or to party. The Greeks hold themselves above everyone else because they are the only ones who actually have fun on this campus besides the athletes and the theater people. Unfortunately, this means that a good percentage of people are involved in Greek Life on campus.

There are plenty of houses and apartments available, as long as you have roommates and no pets. However, Hillsdale is a bit of a rundown community so do not expect places that are all shiny and new! Most of the dorms are in better condition than the off campus housing.

The school shuttle only goes to the Detroit airport, which is about 2 hours away from campus. During breaks, times are limited because they try to get as many people at once. However, there are plenty of people willing to give rides. On the return, using the shuttle is extremely aggravating because of the limited rides, which means you could be waiting for hours for the next or the last passenger. But again, finding someone who can pick you up is not too difficult if you get to know students who live in the area.

You can find a computer lab in every building (except administrative buildings obviously), so unless an entire class is using a particular room, it is very easy to get in, do what you need to do, and get out.

We have about 3 african american people on campus - one of which is the Assistant Dean of Men. Although the school is not technically affiliated with any religion, everyone is some kind of Christian and if you are not, be warned: you will be considered some kind of heathen and constantly bombarded with people trying to convert you.

Since Hillsdale is in Michigan and surrounded by lakes, the weather tends to be a bit windy and cold. The campus is small though so fortunately it doesn't take too long to walk to class.

There are not very many options outside of the dining hall so you get tired of eating the same food. The quality of food the dining hall has is pretty good though so that's why I gave it a B.

Health & Safety:
I've never felt unsafe at Hillsdale; it never even crosses my mind, though the security bunch can be overly cautions sometimes.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
