Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Hofstra may not be a very prestigious institution just yet, but it's definitely getting there. President Rabinowitz has said that he wants to get the University to Ivy League status and is certainly doing a lot to reach that goal. The University will be getting a medical school in 2011, and students who are pre-med will be guaranteed a spot.

The one thing that most students seem to agree on is that the professors are definitely knowledgeable, especially when it comes to the majors. For the distribution classes that everyone is required to take, it might seem like the professors don't care or don't know very much, but once a student starts focusing on the classes for his or her major, things get a lot better. Ninety percent of Hofstra professors have the highest degrees in their fields, and they definitely pass that knowledge down to their students. The professors also help students figure out what to do during and after their time at Hofstra. The professors can assist students in finding internships and also put in a good word for certain students at former places of employment if they think a student deserves it.

This Depends on Your Major and What Professor You Take

Being a mathematics major, it may seem quite difficult to do well when taking upper level courses. But, I strongly advise to create study groups and work on homework and test review (it doesn't matter about the major). My advice would be to try to do your very best on the first couple of assignments/exams so that the professor knows you're a decent student.

The workload of a math major is also dependent on your professor, some may be impossibly difficult, while others can be a breeze.

It Really Depends on Your Major

There is always tutoring options available to you, and if you have trouble in mathematics, there is a math tutoring center that will help you all the time. The professors (depending on your major) can be difficult to understand, but make sure you spend a lot of time when figuring out your schedule. (I strongly recommend checking ratemyprofessor)

The registration process can be never racking though, registration starts at 12:00AM and you have the possibility of not getting into your classes. As time goes on (when you become a junior and senior) it is easier and less stressful to register for classes.

The basement of the library is a great place to study too. They have 3 "study rooms" with a smartboard/projector screen that you connect any laptop too (mac and pc). There are also many other places to study.

Use Your Resources

There's tutoring available for most classes, yet people never go them, IT'S FREE PEOPLE... well technically it isn't. Anyway, the tutors are students who did very well in that class, which make it easier to understand. The professors I have are great they really encourage students to ask questions and want them to completely understand the information. Use the writing center, too. They help you make great papers.

Online Courses

Sometimes online courses are offered during the summer.

Did You Know?
  • Hofstra has recently been ranked sixth in the nation among private colleges and universities in the number of faculty receiving prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships.
  • Hofstra has worked hard to integrate the Internet with classes through Hofstra Blackboard. It's a place where professors can post notes and assignments, and students can subsequently obtain those notes, finish assignments, and send them in all without leaving the dorm room.
  • For incoming students worried about which classes to take or what major to choose, your fears are well put to ease by the aid of an organization called the Center for New Student Support Services. Located on the second floor of the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, not only can they assist you with the academic transition, but also with just about any other questions you may have as a new student.
  • Hofstra has continued to create new areas of study, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Among the new inductees to the course bulletin are a slew of courses making up a new legal studies in business program. One of the new graduate courses is in the the School of Communication and involves documentary film studies. Just recently, the audio/video/film department has begun to evolve into the graduate studies frontier, and surely more options are on the way.
  • For those students looking for somewhere to study besides the deafeningly dull library or in the constantly noisy dorm room, one of the main eateries, Café Bistro at Bits 'n' Bytes, has an expansive dining room, and most students never make their way towards the back. Several comfortable booths are available while you learn and dine at the same time.
