Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are two open-access computer labs, Hammer and Calkins, that are available to all students. However, be warned; they both tend to be crowded right before people have class or around the time of midterms and finals. The computers also take almost 10 minutes to load, so they're probably not the best place to go if you need to print a paper before class. There is also a computer lab in Dempster, even though it is more for communications majors than anyone else.

The Hofstra Portal gives you access to pretty much everything—courses, the bookstore, grades, the Career Center, etc. You can track how many print credits you have and retrieve files stored on your F drive. You can also download Microsoft Office and other programs from the "My Apps" button on the Portal. If you ever have any problems with your computer, you can always bring it to ResNet, and they'll take a look at it for you. If you are bringing a laptop, you'll definitely need an Ethernet cable. Even though most of the dorms have Wi-Fi now, it's still pretty spotty and not always guaranteed to be working. An Ethernet cable is sure to work when you need it to, and it's better to not take chances.

Labs Are Awesome

Hofstra just updated the computer labs with brand new computers, they work really well. And the library usually only fills up around finals week.

Orientation

Well at my orientation the computers at my school were dell and they were very accessible. The speed was very high. I did not bring my own personal computer. However, those that did had immediate access to the internet with no problem.

Hammer Lab and School Wifi

Hammer lab at Hofstra is usually crowded during midterms and finals and during different class changes. The best times to go would be when many classes are in session or at night on normal days. Also, although everyone who registers with the school has WiFi (which can be a hassle in itself for some), there are days that it runs really slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
