Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Attempting to hide the popularity and accessibility of drugs and alcohol on campus is like denying that the sky is blue. There was an incident in the spring 2009 semester with an RA in New Complex being held at gunpoint because he was dealing drugs. These type of incidents are definitely not normal and do not happen often, but that doesn't mean that students aren't taking and selling drugs. Cocaine used to be a big problem a few years ago, but it seems to have been getting better recently. Marijuana usage is extremely popular and common—people walk into the residential buildings reeking of it and very rarely get stopped. If someone is caught smoking, they'll receive a summons to appear in front of the Dean of Students, and then they will get a warning that lasts until the end of the semester. The student will also have to attend a drug seminar.

One thing that many students will notice around the time of midterms and finals is the use and abuse of prescription drugs like Ritalin, Adderall, and Xanax. Students often use these to stay up to cram for an exam or sell them to make a quick profit. While it's scarily easy to find someone who sells or knows someone who sells these drugs, it's not like the entire campus is walking around in a drug-induced stupor. Yes, there are a few bad apples who overdo their alcohol consumption or smoke a lot of marijuana, but they don't represent the school as a whole.

Peer Pressure

I dont feel peer pressure is an issue at hofstra. Those individuals who choose to abuse drugs usually stick together. I have been here for 3 years and am yet to see drugs out in the open its usually behind closed doors and if caught on campus there are consequences
