Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While less than 10 percent of boys and girls on Hofstra's campus join fraternities and sororities, it may sometimes seem like everyone is in a Greek organization. At any time of day, in any part of campus, you are sure to see someone wearing a sweatshirt, jacket, or T-shirt with fraternity or sorority letters. Even if it starts to feel like you're the only person that isn't in one of the two, rest assured that 90 percent of the campus isn't either. But if you are willing to make the commitment, Greek life can be very rewarding. The various organizations have several exclusive events throughout the course of the semester and offer members a support system that will last a lifetime. There is also the opportunity for scholarships from Greek alumni.

If a commitment to Greek life isn't for you, you can still attend many of their events throughout the year. The one time you might really run into trouble trying to do anything on campus is during "Greek Week," when the various organizations compete in different events for "Chapter of the Year." During that week, it is almost impossible to wade through what seems like an endless sea of Greek letters. But many of the other clubs on campus hold events, as well, so if you want to keep away from all things Greek, it is entirely possible to do so.

What Greek Life?

The Greek life at Hofstra generally goes unnoticed to the non-greek students. They do throw some house parties and host specials at the local bars but the students aren't interested in who's hosting the event, they just want to get drunk. Greek life is more considered a nuance to non-greek students because of their abruptness during Greek festivities.

Let Your Life Experience the Greek Life

At Hofstra University, Greek life is strongly encouraged. Many students might believe that joining a fraternity or a sorority would not affect the college experience, but the truth is that that experience could be enormously enhanced. There are multiple advantages of joining the Greek life, such as campus involvement, leadership opportunities, development of social skills & relationships and personal growth. Greek students are encouraged to achieve excellence and improve their GPA's. Besides their academic hard work, community service and other activities, they also host parties which get students involved and have opportunities to meet other people and develop new friendships. I could not join a fraternity for my freshman year, but after analyzing all the advantages the Greek life offers, I will definitely join a fraternity on my sophomore year.
