Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With the exception of a couple of incidents here and there, Hofstra's campus is relatively safe. If there are any major occurrences that might affect members of the community, the University sends out notifications through the CANN (Campus Alert Notification Network). These messages get sent to students' e-mails and phones, through either a prerecorded phone call or a text message. Located around campus are blue-light boxes that either have a phone that calls Public Safety or just the light. If it is just a box with a light, you'll have to call Public Safety from your cell phone. For a decent-sized campus, there aren't nearly enough of these boxes, so it's a good idea to know where they are ahead of time in the unfortunate case you ever need to use one. You should also have Public Safety on speed dial—they will come and pick you up if you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe. You can also arrange to have a student escort accompany you if you're walking across campus late at night.

There are Resident Safety Representatives (RSRs) in the booth of every residential building. You have to use your Hofstra card to get through the first door of most of the buildings, but if you're visiting a friend that lives in a different hall, you'll have to leave your card with the RSR, since you won't be able to swipe in past the second door. It's just a precaution to make sure that everyone is safe and if anything happens, they (the University and the RSRs) know who to hold responsible. Outside of campus, Hempstead can be a pretty scary place, especially at night. Never walk down the Turnpike by yourself once it gets dark;  Hofstra isn't in the best area, and there can be a lot of suspicious people just waiting to assault an unsuspecting college student.

Pretty Safe

Hofstra is pretty safe. The campus is fenced off from the rest of Hempstead, so it is really hard for any burglars or robbers to get on campus late at night. If you are living off campus, I would be a little more careful. There have been a few robberies to people walking around Hempstead late at night. Public Safety is always just a call away. I feel safe on campus and off campus as long as I'm smart about it.

Safety on Campus

I personally feel very safe on campus due to the public safety officers drive around campus and also stand outside certain buildings.
