Hofstra Offers a Variety of Everything.

There is a variety of academic programs more than something for everyone, sometimes it is hard to decide. Social scene is great there are wonderful facilities everywhere, restaurants, gardens, computer labs etc. The computer lab at Calkins is brand new with couches to work on group projects or just do homework with friends. Many clubs to join, or create your own, and of course greek life.

Big Place, Big Choices

To put it bluntly, it's a big school.

In class it doesn't feel like it because the classes are small compared to other large schools.

But once you get to your social life and clubs, you'll find that there is a wide variety on campus of clubs and types of people.

If there is a club you wish was there, make it!

If you don't like the people you've met, find new ones. There's bound to be someone you like at this school.

Facts

Traditions
  • Dutch Festival: Each spring, Hofstra puts on a festival to celebrate its Dutch heritage. Students and visitors can enjoy cultural entertainment ranging from fine foods to unique arts and crafts. Hofstra uses this as an opportunity to showcase the campus itself, as it is planned so that the 100,000 tulips will bloom just in time for the festival.
  • Float Building and Bonfire: The week leading up to Homecoming is very hectic for all of the organizations building floats. They often work late into the night and early morning. At the end of the week, all of the extra wood and scraps are transformed into a huge bonfire outside of the Student Center. It’s open to all students regardless of whether you worked on a float or not.
  • Hofstra Film Festival: At the end of each spring semester, Hofstra holds its own annual film festival in order to showcase the work of its students. It’s open to all students and family, and it is held in the Student Center Theater.
  • Homecoming/Family Weekend: During October of each year, Hofstra combines the football game, alumni events, and family events into one giant weekend. From the parade to the game to the announcement of Homecoming King and Queen, Hofstra offers a rare and unique look at the school for many parents.
  • Irish Festival: The University’s newest cultural festival boasts top-name Irish bands and step-dancing troupes from around the world. There are also a wide variety of Irish food and craft vendors.
  • Italian Festival: Once a year, Hofstra draws in thousands of people from the tri-state area to celebrate Italian contributions to American culture. It is one of the largest and most unique festivals around, providing entertainment including, but not limited to, dancing, singing, native food vendors, wine-tasting, and craft exhibitions. Note: Information for these festivals can be obtained by calling (516) 463-6812.
  • Kick-Off Week: The first week of every fall semester is filled with fun games and activities, primarily intended for incoming freshmen. Among the planned activities are parties, drive-in movies, carnivals, and a giant barbeque. Upperclassmen are present as volunteers to help coordinate events and to help freshmen adapt to their new environment.
Urban Legends
  • Hofstra is connected by a network of underground tunnels.
  • Hofstra spent more than $1 million on a single tree.
  • Hofstra's campus is home to more than 1,000 stray cats.
  • New College is only for “slower” students.
