College Prowler Take

Many of us in the Hofstra community appreciate the plethora of opportunities that are presented to us as college students in New York. While academics may not be the foremost thought on everyone’s mind, when thinking of Hofstra, they have no doubt increased in credibility over recent years. So when you hear someone say that they decided to come to Hofstra to be close to the beach, take into consideration that they wouldn’t be here at all if the academics were not at least somewhat appealing. With the improvement and additions of more technically-advanced facilities, a strong commitment to providing limitless computing power, and a keen awareness of students’ ever growing needs, Hofstra is showing the world that it is willing to invest in the future and to correct what has been done wrong in the past.

All that being said, let me tell you a little story about what the Hofstra experience has been like for me. During my freshman year, I immediately became close with all of my roommates and several other students in my dorm. I lived in one of the houses of Netherlands North, which again are the freshman dorms. We were the type of kids that would stay up late every night partying, hanging out, socializing, and just doing whatever. Most nights, we’d head out in the car and drive around for hours, just familiarizing ourselves with the surrounding areas. By the time freshman year came to an end, I didn’t want to leave New York. A brief summer stint back up in Connecticut seemed like an eternity. Sophomore year picked up right where we had left off, reliving the late-night scene that New York is so famous for. Now that I’ll soon be a graduate of the University, I still feel like I haven’t truly experienced all that I could have. But while I was not able to develop good-working relationships with some professors, I feel very privileged to have been able to work with the professors that have reached out to both me and all of their other students. No matter how much fun you have at school, or how much you like the sports teams, or how great the location is, I’m telling you now that if you don’t find a few professors that you click with, the overall experience at any school will not be satisfying. When all is said and done, Hofstra students will be able to say this because of the experienced and dedicated faculty, and nothing else really even matters.

Education

On the Surface

C+

Everything about life at Hofstra is just on the surface; begin to look a little deeper and you'll rarely find any substance. Most of the programs and events, even the security feels shallow, like it's mainly for show for the rich parents of the students that go here. The classes are for the most part embarrassingly easy and the students in general are of below-average intelligence. However, those with initiative can make the most of their experience and really learn from the better professors and the many speakers and programs held here.

I definitely got what I came here...

I definitely got what I came here for; I’m a television major, and the School of Communication here is fantastic. I’ve done a bunch of video work both for the school and for other companies. I still have a semester left before I graduate, but I feel like I’m already done. I’ve already accomplished everything here that I wanted to.

I wouldn’t change anything that’s...

I wouldn’t change anything that’s happened since I decided to come here. There are lots of good people here, both in the student body and the faculty and staff. I’ve been able to make a lot of good connections that should help me after graduation. Of course, like any place, it has its downside; some of the dorms are in pretty ratty condition. It gets cold and incredibly windy in the winter, and there isn’t really a good sports team to cheer for. On the upside though, we have things like the academics, the nightlife is supreme, and we’re right next to the greatest city in the world.

Hofstra has its ups and downs, and...

Hofstra has its ups and downs, and it can be extreme on both sides. One of the most exciting times I’ve had here was during my freshman year. We would party in the Netherlands courtyard every night once the weather was nice. We’d have live music, football, Frisbee, and just an overall mecca of social activity. All of the good friends I’ve made here are the ones that I met my first year. After freshman year, it’s all downhill; things get way more serious and complicated. Classes become more important, and you won’t have nearly the amount of free time that you once did. I’d say that Hofstra has prepared me for life past graduation; my professors have been great over the years, and on a scale of one to ten, I would give it a seven.

I would say that I’ve definitely had a great time at Hofstra, but at the same time, I can’t wait to get off of Long Island. After awhile, the over-populated areas and increasingly hard to handle traffic jams really can bother you. The best part of being at Hofstra has been the nightlife, and the worst is definitely the traffic. Academically, I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot here. I did an internship in the city last semester and have another one lined up for the summer. I don’t know exactly where I’ll make my career, but I feel prepared. If we’re talking on a scale of one to ten, I would give Hofstra a six and a half.
