Quick StatsBest Ways to Get Around Town
- Bicycle or rollerblades
- Car
- Hofstra Blue Beetle
- Long Island Rail Road
How to Get to the Airport
- A cab ride to the airports will cost $30 for one student and $4 for each additional passenger.
- Both airports are accessible by car, LIRR, or taxi. JFK has a new added feature called AirTrain JFK. It opened just within this past year and connects several area train stations directly to JFK terminals. The closest stop to campus is the Jamaica LIRR station, which is a stop right on the Hempstead Line. The approximate cost for AirTrain JFK is only $5.
College Prowler Take
Hofstra certainly provides its students with more than enough transportation options. Several students talk about the simplicity of getting into the city. Any of the area’s multiple train stations will connect you with NYC’s Penn Station, which is located right in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Not too many students seem too keen on the idea of taking the Blue Beetle to get around. These buses, convenient as they are, are mostly beaten up both in and outside. The seats are ripped or torn, and many students will tell you that they have a distinctly bad smell. Also, avoid taking taxis as often as you can, the local buses are far cheaper. Taxis should pretty much be reserved for rides back to campus from a bar, if you’re incapable of driving. Many students still don’t realize how sizeable the public transportation is, and the reason for this is that we all have our own vehicles on campus. Driving around Long Island can easily turn the most laid-back driver into a mean aggressor on the road. Most local Long Islanders drive like maniacs, which doesn’t help when the roads are jammed up. Taking the train or the local buses around is easy and cheap, so it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the schedules and destinations. On average, there is a train departing from each station every hour en route to NYC. Bus stops are plentiful, especially right around campus. Local buses normally stop once every half hour. Once you become acquainted with all of the transportation options, you’ll feel like a whole new world has opened up to you.

You can get pretty much get anywhere you need to go if you have your own car. The only times when I use the train is if I’m going into the city around rush hour. The city is only a half hour away, but during rush hour, it can take you two hours if you’re driving. The LIRR will get you there in 40 minutes no matter what, and it only costs like 10 bucks for round-trip fare. |

Even if you aren’t able to bring your own car to school, you’ll never feel like you’re stuck on campus. The Blue Beetle can take you to the beach or the mall, and especially to the train station. From there, it’s a quick ride to NYC where your options become limitless. |

There are train stations all over the place, but if you want to take your own car and park it at the station, you’ll have to be careful. A lot of spaces are designated for local residents only, and you’ll get a hefty ticket for being in one of these lots. |

From Hofstra, it’s just a hop and a skip into the city, which is considered the largest transportation hub in the world. Penn Station will connect you with any part of the country via train, and Grand Central Station will take you just about anywhere by bus. The subway system in the city is also great, and it’s simple to navigate. Rates and fares are all pretty inexpensive, so we have a lot of options being at Hofstra. |
