Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If cigarette smoke aggravates your asthma, think twice before coming to Hollins. Smoking is a huge part of the social scene on campus, and a lot of students start smoking to fit in with that crowd. Walking up the steps to the dining hall can sometimes feel like trekking through a smoky, eye-stinging fog. If you’re not a smoker, don’t worry; most students on campus don't smoke. In contrast to cigarettes, marijuana has a subtle, non-threatening presence on campus. If you’re looking for it, you’ll find it—try making friends with the numerous free-spirited hippie types on campus. Otherwise, you could spend four years on campus and never come across marijuana at all.

On weekend nights, the sound of the unofficial Hollins mantra—"Chug a beer like a Hollins girl can!"—rises far above the quiet scribbling sounds of students studying and writing papers. Unlike many private colleges, Hollins is not a dry campus, so students over 21 are allowed to drink. The art dorm, the campus apartments, and the history department are infamous for throwing wild parties with plenty of alcohol. Just as with smoking, plenty of students don’t drink, or if they do, drink responsibly. Whether you want to get smashed every weekend, drink a beer every now and then, or focus on hitting the books, you’ll be able to do so here.

Penalties for underage drinking and drug use are mild. A conduct council composed of students meets occasionally to hear cases of students untactful enough to get caught. Consequences for a first offense might include writing an article for the school paper about the dangers of alcohol. Hollins women have a general reputation for being able to balance partying with school work, so as long as you maintain that balance, you won’t run into trouble.

I Don't See It but I Know It's There

I don't know very many people who do drugs on campus. From what I have heard, drinking is pretty prevalent at parties though. There are however options for people who want to avoid the party scene. There are "Wellness Halls" available to students. Wellness Halls are dorm communities where people sign a contract saying that they refuse to use any substances while on or off campus.

Drug Policy

Since I've been here at Hollins drugs have not been in my vocabulary nor that of the friends I have made here. Alcohol is talked about but pretty much it's the upper classmen who are 21 and older who drink, there was that one rare incident where a freshman got drunk, but other than that our campus is a pretty safe environment with no peer pressure that I have encountered.
