College Prowler Take

While there are drugs on campus, they do not constitute a visible presence. The only truly visible substance is alcohol. Tubs of beer, martinis, and bottles of Southern Comfort can be found at the majority of Hollins parties. A lot of students indulge in drink, but nondrinkers don’t report feeling too pressured to join in. There is some underage drinking that occurs, but upperclass students are generally good about keeping an eye out for their younger classmates. They don’t want them to go too far or to do anything stupid. Drinking and driving is widely and adamantly discouraged by all. Fortunately, since most parties occur on campus, students can drink without having to worry about how they will get home.

There are some harder drugs around, but those users stay pretty tucked away. In fact, many of the few students who do use hard drugs will drop out of school after just a few semesters. Students feel as though there is not a high degree of availability of anything but alcohol and marijuana. Actually, there is not any more pot usage than you would find on most other college campuses. Caffeine pills have recently experienced a surge in popularity. It is not uncommon to see the bookstore supply of stay-awake pills pretty thin during midterms or finals. Overall, drug usage exists, but it is completely up to the individual student as to what, if any, role it will play in their life.

Alcohol is the most popular "drug" to be used on campus, though I can think of a handful of people who would smoke. They try not to be obvious about it, however, as there are relatively serious consequences for anyone caught with drugs.

Drugs are not a big deal on campus. I know there are people who do drugs, but as far as I can tell, they just smoke pot at parties. Nothing gets in the way with Hollins.

I don't think it is a huge part of campus life, and it really depends who you hang out with. You tend to know who the people are that are into that sort of thing and can stay away. There is never any pressure to do drugs.

I’m pretty amazed by how well the drinkers and the non-drinkers get along on campus. I went to a NEFA party and found that there were a bunch of partiers there who were just drinking water. No one pressured them to drink, and they were having fun. At the same time, the non-drinkers weren’t judging those who were drinking. I joined in the most amazing conversation where this half-trashed philosophy major was debating the meaning of life with a completely sober first-year. They were both really into the conversation and making some really good points. I don’t know why this was so striking to me. I guess it just showed me how everyone seems to respect everyone else’s choices here.

Drugs are not too prevalent, though I’m sure there is some drug use. Hollins is definitely not known as a school where people use a lot of drugs. Some students here will become concerned for a friend if they even think about smoking a joint. Once, one of my friends even told me that she was worried about me because I had an aspirin and three beers in one night. I appreciated her concern and thought, ‘Wow, some girls here live really straight lives.’ To be fair, there are lots of students on the completely opposite end of the spectrum. Some girls wouldn’t give a second thought to an aspirin and eight beers in one night!
