Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Hollins doesn't have sororities. Looking for sisterhood? Specialty housing? Hazing? Binge-drinking? You'll find a little of all of that at Holllins, just without the Greek letters. On such a small campus, students don't need to wear special pins or attend wild parties to feel like they're a part of a group of sisters. Hollins used to have a few sororities, but they dissolved about 40 years ago after a student movement against them. With more than 30 clubs and organizations and seven specialty houses to choose from, students don’t have a hard time meeting others with similar interests.

Ring Night, a tradition where juniors earn their class rings from their secret senior "sisters," will give students their fill of hazing. Seniors give their juniors a list of demands, such as "Dress up like Voldemort and meet Harry Potter on Front Quad for an epic duel," or "Bring me a Subway club with tomatoes, lettuce, and mayonnaise on it." Juniors spend the weekend dressing up, singing and dancing onstage, writing poems, smearing paint on each other, gallivanting around town, and hardly sleeping, in hopes of earning a basket of gifts at the end of the weekend from their senior sisters. Overall, Hollins students form bonds of sisterhood without the help of sororities, and though some wish the school would reinstate Greek life, most are happy with clubs, specialty housing, and unique Hollins traditions.

I don’t care much for the whole Greek system. I think there’s a lot of classism and discrimination involved in the whole pledging business. Sure, a lot of sororities might be trying to change that, but why invite that kind of controversy on campus? You can bond with women without having the endorsement of a questionable institution behind you.

I don’t think that the absence of sororities is really noticed at Hollins. No one talks about how they wish they were around. Students don’t spend a lot of time talking about how they are glad they’re not here, either. It’s kind of like asking, ‘How do you feel about the lack of pine trees on campus?’ It’s just not an issue.

Facts

Did You Know? Hollins does have two active secret societies, Freya and ADA. Freya is an anonymous group famous for walking around campus wearing black robes and carrying candles. ADA's membership is not secret, but their initiation rituals are. They promote school spirit by making announcements, performing skits, and wearing purple on Tuesdays.
