College Prowler Take
There aren’t really any coherent profiles of Hollins women. They are preppy, bookish, artsy, nerdy, butch, and hippie. However, do expect to find more obviously wealthy and primped women than you would in the general population. Also, definitely expect to encounter more unshaven women. There is a good amount of support for individuality at Hollins, and so many students develop a lot self-confidence here. This prompts many women to flaunt an unconventional and unique beauty. If you’re looking to date men, you won’t have much success on campus. You’ll have to truck it to one of the many nearby schools that are teeming with men, like Hampden-Sydney, VMI, Virginia Tech, or Washington & Lee. If you don’t have a car, don’t worry too much about finding a ride. Every weekend, groups of Hollins students pile into cars to party at the frats or football games. Overall, most Hollins women do pretty well at snagging a boyfriend if that is what they are after. Students don’t venture too much into the Roanoke population for male companionship. There is a very active lesbian and bisexual dating scene on campus. The scene does get a little cliquish; with people gravitating more toward people in their circle of friends. Also, the dating news between women can generate more gossip than those involved would like. However, for all these drawbacks, lesbians still feel as though they have a strong support system at Hollins. Many lesbians feel comfortable with being open about their relationships and the casual dating scene.

Students range from pristine,...
Students range from pristine, perfectly-groomed pearl girls to unshaven, outspoken hippies. Everyone gets along, though. Some girls get some strange looks from the more conventional folk who aren’t used to their wild appearance. However, by the end of senior year, most preppy girls are pretty used to the hippies. I don’t think the hippies ever get quite used to the pearl girls. I don’t really fit into either category, but I have gotten used to the unique smell of Chanel and patchouli that I encounter every time I go to class. |

I was happy to come to Hollins where I could have an open relationship with a woman. However, I did have to put up with a lot of people butting into my business. I guess that’s the drawback to dating in a close and small environment. |

There is a wide variety of girls...
There is a wide variety of girls at Hollins. There is a large group of conservative, pearl-wearing, pink girls. There are also a lot of art-oriented students and dancers. For some unknown reason, those students can’t seem to keep their clothes on. It’s crazy. I think they spend a disproportionate amount of time modeling nude or streaking. Hey, whatever floats their boat. Even though the school is small, everyone manages to find a niche. |

Yes - Students who have had an exam with their home doctor or with the campus doctor can fill their birth control prescription on campus for a discounted price. Also, Hollins provides emergency contraception. Condoms and dental dams are available for free.
Social Scene
The supportive social atmosphere helps many women who might have felt stifled or awkward in high school to become confident in their social interactions. There are definitely cliques that develop. However, most students do not have a hard time finding a group of friends to join. While some cliques may feel that they are on the top of the social hierarchy, most people agree that the thought is just in their heads. No group thinks that another is somehow intrinsically better than theirs is. While most women tend to settle into a defined “group” of friends, you’ll definitely see these groups intermingle.
Hookups or Relationships?
There is a good mix of single students and students in relationships. There are a lot of women who have boyfriends at a nearby college. The lesbian dating scene is more visible on campus. It also tends to generate much more gossip.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
People strike up romantic relationships in all sorts of places at Hollins. However, if you’re only looking for a man, you’ll have to wait until the weekends. Then you can go hunting at a nearby college or check out the male prospects at the apartment parties. Students who are open to dating women can find romantic interest in class, at a party, in the cafeteria, or just hanging out on Front Quad.
Dress Code
Variety reigns supreme at Hollins. There are plenty of students who show up at class in their pajamas and slippers. It also would not be surprising to see a woman toting a Vera Bradley bag and sporting the latest designer trend, topped off with a string of pearls. There are also those students who seem to make dressing their own personal art. Local Goodwills are foraged for vintage clothes, bizarre prints, and outrageous frocks. Of course, there are always those who stick to the basics—jeans and a T-shirt.
