Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

You could no more describe the “average” Hollins woman than you could describe the “average” piece of Chex Mix. You’ve got the pearl-wearing horseback riders; the artsy, modern dancers; the manga-crazed, fantasy-loving creative writing majors; the easy-going, faux-hawked lesbians; the busy, overachieving student government officers; and many, many others. One characteristic that unifies almost all Hollins women is a strong personality; the accepting atmosphere and strong sense of community on campus gives students the freedom and self-confidence to express themselves and flaunt an unconventional beauty. Though Hollins has distinct cliques, most students form friendships that bridge the gaps between those groups; at Hollins you don't have to hang out with just one group of people.

The lesbian dating scene is very present on campus. Hollins has a strong support system for lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, intersex, queer, and questioning women. Like any dating scene in a small community, it generates lots of gossip and drama. Those who prefer men seek out off-campus resources, such as neighboring schools (Virginia Tech, Virginia Military Institute, Roanoke College) or downtown restaraunts and clubs. Don’t expect to meet men at Hollins parties; the admissions office claims they “truck men in” from other schools for dances and parties, but this is not true. At Oktoberfest 2011, for example, approximately five men graced the dance floor, and most of them had come with their girlfriends.

The Skinny on an All-Girls School

First off I will break all stereotypes and say that the drama at an all girls' campus is much lower than other campuses!! The lack of males in the classroom is unnoticeable and there are many off-campus hangout places to meet guys. The girls are not catty at all, unless you get in an extremely over the top dramatic lesbian relationship, but most girls do well at avoiding that. Some weekends may feel a little limiting, but overall the all girls' experience gives much more room for a female student to truly be her amazing self.

The sport teams tend to be very rich and cliquish. Most everyone else come from really different life styles and find themselves dressing in cloths that clash just for fun!

we are not a co-ed school. Which I find refreshing, and noteworthy.

Facts

Social Scene

The supportive atmosphere at Hollins brings many shy and awkward students out of the shells they hid in during high school. Hollins is a great place for women to feel free to express themselves in a way that would not be possible at larger coed schools. Cliques exist, but their boundaries are loose, and most groups of friends intermingle with others.

Hookups or Relationships?

There is a good mix of single students and students in relationships. There are a lot of students who have girlfriends at Hollins or boyfriends at a nearby colleges, as well as plenty of girls happy with being single. There are some random hook-ups, but they're not as prevalent as they might be at a larger school.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

People strike up romantic relationships in all sorts of places at Hollins. However, if you’re only looking for a man, you’ll have to wait until the weekends. Then you can go hunting at a nearby college or check out the male prospects at the apartment parties. Students who are open to dating women can find romantic interest in class, at a party, in the cafeteria, or just hanging out on Front Quad.

Dress Code

Variety reigns supreme at Hollins. There are plenty of students who show up at class in their pajamas and slippers. It also would not be surprising to see a woman toting a Vera Bradley bag and sporting the latest designer trend, topped off with a string of pearls. There are also those students who seem to make dressing their own personal art. Local Goodwills are foraged for vintage clothes, bizarre prints, and outrageous frocks. Of course, there are always those who stick to the basics—jeans and a T-shirt.

Did You Know? Every year, Outloud (gay-straight alliance) holds events on campus in celebration of National Coming Out Week. Usually they bring a "closet" door to the Moody Plaza for people to "come out" of.
