Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Stolen food is the most prevalent crime problem at Hollins, as any student who has ever tried to store her pint of Ben & Jerry's in the dorm fridge will tell you. Many students keep their doors unlocked and leave valuables like laptops and phones unattended in public spaces without fear of them being stolen. However, Hollins is an open campus, which means anyone from the community is allowed to walk around, so crime is not always 100 percent avoidable. Reports of actual theft, like stolen iPods, do come up about once a semester.

For that tiny percentage of inevitable crime, the campus police patrol the grounds all day and night, ready to spring into action at the first hint of theft or vandalism. All the officers are very friendly and will smile and wave to students they pass. The officers are happy to do anything to make students feel safe. One drawback to having so many eager, attentive officers on a campus where not much exciting crime takes place is that they hand out parking tickets like Halloween candy.

Though crime is rare at Hollins, illness is not. Health Services is good at putting bandages on minor cuts, but if you have a more severe medical problem, go to a real doctor. At Hollins, your double ear infection will likely be diagnosed as allergies, your mild cold treated as a strep throat, and your leprosy covered with a dollop of Neosporin and a SpongeBob Band-Aid. One service that students do appreciate is counseling. All students can take advantage of six free sessions offered by the health center.

Definitely Safe

I have never felt more safe and secure than I do at Hollins. Living with PTSD, and the constant worry makes finding a safe place very hard for me, but the campus security is very thorough and there are very few crimes that have taken place. I am not afraid to walk around alone at night, for instance. I love Hollins and the safe environment it provides.

Unforseen Dangers

I use the term security lightly when referring to Hollins. We have an open campus, which means no guards at the entrance, and pretty much no surveillance either. If there are security cameras on campus, they are not advertised, though I doubt there are any. The only real security is the rounds made by the security staff in their cars. I make it a point not to walk back to the apartments at night, and if circumstances force me to, I will not make a phone call or listen to my ipod while walking, and I will tuck my ponytail into my jacket. Call my paranoid, but I'm from an urban area and I have heightened awareness of danger. The only step we have in the right direction are the blue light emergency towers. Thankfully I have not been in a situation that requires them, so I don't know anything about how quick the response time is for them, but they are no placed particularly strategically. They are all over campus surely, but the odds of being able to run to one easily while being pursued I feel are very slim. There is keycard access to dorms, but when girls leave doors propped open (most campuses have alarms on the dorm doors for this very reason- but we don't) and it is not that hard to steal someone's ID card. Also, there is the fact that anyone - and I do mean anyone - can walk the loop or walk on our campus at any time they please, with little to no questioning of their purpose. There have been plenty of times I have not felt safe on campus, in any building or any dorm.

Security on Campus

I have several times required help from the security. Battery Dead, they've come out and started it, even when it was late at night. I am not on campus that often at night, but when I am due to a performance, or seeing a guest speaker, etc. I do feel safe walking to my vehicle at night.

Facts

Did You Know?
  • The Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CASA) is a student-run group that provides support and resources for survivors of sexual assault.
  • Though sexual assault is rare at Hollins, it's not unheard of. In the spring of 2011, an alleged rape occurred in the laundry room of the campus apartments—the first incident of reported sexual assault since 2007. The University took immediate steps to make the laundry room safer by installing locks on the doors.
  • Twelve emergency call boxes are located across campus.
  • Campus Safety offers an escort service. If a student doesn't feel comfortable walking back to her room from the parking lot at night, she can call the security office and request an escort.
  • Health Services offers six free counseling sessions per year for Hollins students. Afterward, sessions cost $20 each.
