Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Many students get bored in Roanoke. If you’re used to big city life, you’ll be frustrated by this “charming” city, where downtown shops close around 6 p.m., nightclubs (the few there are) welcome mostly crowds of 30-year-olds, and the city attraction residents boast most about is a light-up star on top of a mountain. On the bright side, the city is very safe. Roanoke is not a college town, despite being home to two four-year institutions—Hollins and Roanoke College—and students who crave a college-town atmosphere travel 45 minutes away to Blacksburg to hang out with the Virginia Tech crowd. On the other hand, some students find plenty to do on campus and in Roanoke.

If you like hiking, biking, canoeing, and rock climbing, living on a campus surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains will provide you with more than enough to do. The Appalachian Trail is only a ten-minute drive away. Many students also find that the quirky downtown shops, restaurants, art galleries, and farmers' market provide an atmosphere that is impossible to find in larger cities. Roanoke also has a mid-sized mall and several movie theaters that keep many students entertained. Still others never venture off campus at all and are perfectly happy watching weekend movies in the Visual Arts Center, attending club events, or just hanging out with friends in the dorms.

Pretty Okay

Not much diversity in the town but that's really improving. The local shops are the best things but everything closes at 9. Kinda of sucks.

Ronoake Is "Quaint"

HOllins University is 20 minutes away from Downtown Ronoake. The city is what I would call "quaint." There's only a small block radius of "things to do" but there are always things happening! Saturday morning markets, No Shame Theatre, Studio Ronoake, cute boutique shops and a great chocolate/stationary store. Local attitude about hollins women is fairly positive. We've got a pretty large community following in terms of the University's theatrical productions, at least. Still, to get anywhere, you need a car. The shuttle does run downtown but it's somewhat unreliable.
