Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you don't have a car (or a friend with a car), good luck trying to party downtown, unless you don't mind coming home by midnight on the shuttle. Some students call for taxis, which solves the problem of parking and choosing a designated driver. The Park is a popular venue for students because anyone 18-and-up can get in. Even though it's a gay bar, you don't have to be gay to enjoy it. There are a few 21-and-up clubs, but if you're used to big city venues, the Roanoke nightlife will seem dull.

The two main party scenes on campus take place at the apartments and NEFA (fine arts dorm). NEFA parties hold the distinction of being the most flamboyant and high-energy, and the apartments have a very different atmosphere. If you are looking for something more close to a frat or sorority scene, this is the place for you. Also, a few times each semester, the Black Student Alliance will hold dances in the Rat, or the Hollins Activity Board (HAB) will host mixers or bring in bands. Students are especially drawn to these events when enticed with free drinks. When students get tired of Hollins events, they head to nearby schools like Virginia Tech and Roanoke college to find bigger parties.

For students who aren’t into drinking or dancing, check out the movies HAB shows in the Visual Arts Center every Friday and Saturday night. You can also take the shuttle to the Valley View Mall to shop, to the Valley Movie Theatre to watch a film, or to downtown Roanoke to grab some dinner. For those with cars, drive to the top of Mill Mountain one night and see one of Roanoke’s most famous attractions: the Roanoke Star. The view of the city from up here is spectacular, especially at night.

If You Are Under 21.....

Inside Hollins there are some school-club parties going on but they are not that good...they always too crazy or creepy. But most of the nightlife off-campus are 21 above, and you need a cab to get back.

Dead Campus?

On a normal day the Hollins campus dies around 4:30 because most classes have finished. However, we do have many excellent organized parties, most notably ones hosted by our North End Fine Arts (NEFA) students. Some may say that Hollins is absolutely not a party school, and it isn't, but you can always find a party on the weekends if you would like one. The nightlife is usually hidden, but is still always a good time.

You Have to Make the Effort

The options as far as campus nightlife are bleak. There will be an occasional apartment get together, which will only be fun if you are really good friends with everyone. NEFA (fine arts dorm)has regular parties, but they are very alternative and have to end by 2 am. You can catch the Hollins shuttle downtown, which offers several bars and dance clubs. But make sure you catch it back to campus at midnight and bring money for the cover charges, usually $5.The majority of legitimate nightlife happens at the schools nearby. So make friends with girls who make the weekend trips to Tech and Hampden Sydney.

Facts

Club Crawler

Roanoke, VA is certainly not known for its clubs. Most students who crave the club scene truck it down to Blacksburg, VA and Virginia Tech for the weekend. The one Roanoke club that consistently draws a Hollins crowd is the Park.

Organization Parties

The Hollins Activity Board plans parties and “blenders” every month. The Near East Fine Arts House (NEFA) hosts fun theme parties, and there is always a party going on in the apartments.

Did You Know? Student clubs and organizations are allowed to serve alcohol at events they host as long as Sodexo (caterers for Hollins) provides it.

The Park

This GLBT club features a decent-sized dance floor, fairly priced drinks, and cheesy techno music. Folks from all walks of life show up to dance and socialize. You’ve got to be 18 to get in and 21 to drink. The owners are pretty serious about this. The standout feature for this club is the weekly drag show. Attendance and enthusiasm run high on drag show nights.

202 Market

Upscale restaurant by day, 202 is a venue that few students visit for the food, though it has a reputation for being delicious. At night, however, the venue comes alive with an eclectic selection of music, and it's open until 2 a.m.

Metro!

Come to this hip bar for sushi and martinis. Students who seek a more metropolitan atmosphere frequent Metro! Expect to lounge around on the stylish couches, while chatting with primped patrons and listening to bouncy techno music. You’ve got to be 21 to get in, and bring plenty of cash, as the prices are high.

Schooner’s

This is the closest bar to Hollins, so it attracts students who don’t want to travel downtown or to Grandin to hang out. There will occasionally be a Hollins night when students can get half-price pitchers of beer. On nights when there isn’t a band, the televisions blare sports games. Sometimes there will be a DJ who will dish out rap or dance music. The atmosphere and the crowd can change quite a bit from night to night, and students never know what to expect. Count on this: Your ID will be checked.

Community Inn

This hole-in-the-wall establishment is conveniently located near the Grandin Theatre and Grace’s Place Pizzeria. Many students pop in after a movie to listen to the jukebox, play some pool, and drink for cheap. The atmosphere is a little on the grungy side, but the people are friendly.

Corned Beef & Co.

Corned Beef is one of the few bars in Roanoke with a decent-sized dance floor. They have live bands or a DJ every weekend. You never know what kind of music will be the pick of the night. They boast a ritzier atmosphere with a wide cigar collection and a strict dress code—no T-shirts or jeans, please. If you’ve got some cash to burn, and you want to hobnob with the local doctors and lawyers, this is the place for you. Also, you’ve got to be 21 to get in. The only thing they will scrutinize harder than your ID is what you’re wearing.
