College Prowler Take
Most students are quite pleased with the variety of restaurants in Roanoke. Unfortunately, only two (Hollywood’s and Lew’s) are within walking distance. Student favorites are all clustered downtown, which is about a 15-minute drive. There, you can find whatever your heart desires, whether it is Thai, Indian, burgers, wraps, seafood, or whatever. Students are in agreement that the food is out of this world. In fact, many are surprised to find such an array of diverse cuisines in such a small city. On the whole, the downtown restaurants are independently owned.
The chain restaurants can be found near Valley View Mall. While there’s usually not a huge price difference between the two, some students head to the chains because they are closer to Hollins and closer to the mall. Unfortunately, most restaurants do not offer student discounts. Since Roanoke is not too much of a college town, the local establishments are more accustomed to catering to an older crowd. There are a few places downtown that could break your budget, but there are also plenty of affordable alternatives. The most popular hangout spot for Hollins students is Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the management doesn’t mind if you stick around a while to read or to work on your laptop. Students looking for a night out usually pair the Olive Garden with the Valley View Grande Theatre or Grace’s Place with the Grandin Theatre. Hollywood’s is a very popular spot for their desserts, baked goods, and wine selection, also.

There are only a couple of restaurants in the immediate vicinity (Hollywood's, Veranda Bistro), but there are lots of options once you head into downtown Roanoke (Metro, Wasabi's, Macado's, and many more). Also, Roanoke is home to a great independent coffee chain, Mill Mountain Coffee. It's a great place to get a cup of coffee, hang out, or do homework.

There are lots of great places to eat in Roanoke, but most of them require a car to reach, though there is a shuttle service off campus every weekend. A very popular restaurant that is within walking distance would be Hollywood's, best known for their incredible desserts.

I come from a big city and was all geared up to be disappointed with the restaurant scene in Roanoke. I was totally wrong, and I’m so happy about that. I’ve had some of the best Thai and Indian food of my life in Roanoke. You definitely need to try Swagat and Nawab! |

Hollywood’s is a standard for when there’s nothing good in the cafeteria. If you’re up for a drive, Grace’s Place has the best pizza. For a pricey night out, there are plenty of places downtown. When your parents are in town, definitely have them take you to Hotel Roanoke for dinner. If you are looking for a cheap lunch downtown, I would suggest the Little Dipper. Not only do they have really good sandwiches, but they’ve got the most amazing smoothies. The peaches ‘n cream smoothie is the best. |

The Thai place downtown is so good. I think that Hollins should just hire some of the local chefs in Roanoke to work in our cafeteria. I’m serious about this. A lot of the local restaurants use a lot of really fresh local produce. Why can’t we have that? |
