Athletics

The atheltics here at Hollins are very intense as they are taken very seriously. Team performance is wonderful as the teams do everything together. Fan support and school spirit is through the roof. The athletic facilities are well-kept.

None

There are some exceptions for mothers, students that live with their parents, or non-traditional students, but all full time undergrads are required to live on campus. It can be a pro or con depending on the student's needs.

Old

Most of the dorms on campus are old except the freshman dorm.most of the regular dorms don't even have A/C!

Pretty Okay

Not much diversity in the town but that's really improving.The local shops are the best things but everything closes at 9. Kinda of sucks.

Zero Awareness

Our teams are amazing and work very hard, but the rest of campus has minimal involvement and school spirit is very low.

Exploring Interests

Hollins offers a unique variety of academic options that are keystones to a liberal arts education. While at most schools you'd be stuck taking a huge chemistry lecture, at Hollins you can take acting classes, dance classes, even classes in stage makeup. The social scene is hugely varied, and if you're a social butterfly, it's perfect. You can be friends with jocks, arts people, nerds, and everyone in between. The campus life is vibrant and friendly. What sets Hollins apart is the immense personal growth every student experiences. I've changed so much, and I've only been here for a little over two months. Being at Hollins is immersing yourself in a place full of fascinating people ready to share their story and let you write yours.

Experience at Hollins

Overall I am happy with my time here at Hollins. The faculty is the best and the small classes are really wonderful. We have a huge library and it has the best study spots. Generally, people here are friendly and nice.If I had the option of applying here again I would.

Loving Every Minute

I cannot gush enough about how amazing I think Hollins is. The only thing you have to be careful about is finding a balance between socializing and academics, because there is so much to constantly be involved in. It's got great opportunities to explore your learning interests, fascinating people, and so much to do. I can't picture myself anywhere else.

Off-Campus Housing at Hollins

Finding housing off campus at Hollins is pretty difficult. They don't have any cheap housing near the campus and the ones that are are kind of run down and in sketchy neighborhoods. If you room with someone its not so bad; you can find some nice places. Personally, I think it would be cheaper than living on campus, but if you want the social interaction with peers, on campus is you best bet.

Off-Campus Dining at Hollins

There a few fast food places down the road from the campus. They are within walking distance but you might want to drive. But if you are looking for good quality food you would have to drive downtown. Downtown they offer a variety of food and they are relatively cheap.

Weird Weather

Campus is situated in a valley, and often has weather differing from the rest of the area.

Self Governed

All honor code violations, with the exception of vehicle infractions, are adjudicated by the Honor Code, which is student run.

Not for Me.

This school can be very overbearing with it's trying to be liberal-ness. Being an all girls school most everyone is part of the LGBTQ community and although i am a ally you are kind of looked down upon if your a straight girl on campus. Also with it being an all girls school you tend to be around the same views all the time and i believe that you can have more experiences and views on a co-ed campus. Also being an art major i don't find this campus very inspiring.

Apartments

They can be kind of small because 2 to 4 people live in each apartment. They are located right off campus so the availability is nice.

Hollins Transportation

There are shuttles regularly to some of the major areas (downtown) malls, and also transportation provided for attending church services.

Girls Only!

This is a girls only university. There are guys in the graduate program, but the undergrads rarely interact with them.

Picky Parking

there is a lot of parking available but you must park in in the lot your parking pass is good for. Freshman park in "Siberia" which is often made to seem worse than it is. Its only like a 5 min walk from an off the freshman dorms.

All Sorts of Girls at Hollins

There's all sorts of girls at Hollins. Pretty much anything's accepted at Hollins.

Hollins Is Diverse.

I've met people from all fifty states at Hollins along with people from other countries. People have all sorts of religious and political beliefs. All sexual orientations are represented.

Hollins Is Great.

Hollins feels safe and accepting. They take great care of their students. The only bad thing is how long it takes for the heaters to get turned on.

What Sets Hollins Apart

Hollins is a wonderful university. Not only is the landscape around the school beautiful, everyone is so kind. Because of the honor code, which prohibits lying, cheating, and stealing, we don't have as many problems with theft. There is transportation to the other schools for certain events, so if you're straight or bisexual and looking for a boyfriend, there is help in getting there. There are numerous fun activities on campus for nearly every interest. There is a great supermarket only a mile's walk away.

Also, there is the free store, one of my favourite parts of Hollins. The professors are fasinating and the classrooms are great. The computers and labs which they are in are top notch.

Awful Parking

IF you have a decent parking pass you may have a chance of finding a good parking space. Otherwise, you're pretty much out of luck.

You Have to Make the Effort

The options as far as campus nightlife are bleak. There will be an occasional apartment get together, which will only be fun if you are really good friends with everyone. NEFA (fine arts dorm)has regular parties, but they are very alternative and have to end by 2 am. You can catch the Hollins shuttle downtown, which offers several bars and dance clubs. But make sure you catch it back to campus at midnight and bring money for the cover charges, usually $5.The majority of legitimate nightlife happens at the schools nearby. So make friends with girls who make the weekend trips to Tech and Hampden Sydney.

Liberal Arts

Being a small school Hollins can cater to your academics in ways larger schools cannot. The professors are inspiring and very helpful. Class sizes are small and professors generally know their students personally. The curriculum and workload can be challenging, but not overwhelming. And that really depends on how hard or how easy you make it on yourself, by what major you choose and what classes you select.

Sense of Community

Hollins is its own community and it can be great sometimes. Most everybody gets along, and are accepting of all different types of people. The only downside is it can be a bubble that you get stuck in. Its so far away from town that unless you have a car, its hard to get off campus for a while.
