College Prowler Take
Most students do not at all fear for their safety while they are on campus. The most talked about testament to this is the ease that students feel while walking alone at night. There is always one security car circling the campus, and most officers will wave to everyone they pass. The majority of people you will come in contact with at Hollins will be fellow students, professors, and staff. There is a general sense of trust in the community. Of course, there are the occasional nights when carloads of frat-type boys will show up at Hollins for an event, but they are usually monitored fairly closely by campus security and even more closely by Hollins students. The most trouble they usually cause will be a drunken fight between themselves. Many students do not feel the need to lock their doors while they are in class or when they go to sleep. Most main doors to the dorms stay locked. However, there are some who feel this is more of a bother than a necessity. Thus, a minor battle breaks out between the students who prop doors open and the RAs and Campus Safety officers who make it a point remove the prop. Students will leave their jacket or even a laptop in the computer lab for days at a time, only to find the item untouched when they go back to retrieve it. Of course, there are some thefts that do occur on campus; the big target, though, seems to be the food in the communal refrigerators in the dorms.

Security is working around the...
Security is working around the clock. There is no crime on our campus even though it is an open campus. We have emergency text messaging and a mass campus-wide announcement system that notifies everyone to lock themselves into their room or building. Also they are upgrading the dorms from traditional lock and key enty to an ID swipe entry.

Like any school, there are some...
Like any school, there are some petty thefts on campus, but it is really difficult to get into dorms other than your own because of different keys per dorm. We have an emergency blue light system on campus so that if you are in trouble you can press it and be automatically in touch with emergency personnel. Since it is a small campus, you tend to know who is supposed to be there and who is not, so you can ask the person what they are doing there or ask a campus safety officer to do it for you. Campus Safety can escort you back to your dorms at night if you want them to and they do check people's identity cards at night to make sure that people are suppose to be on campus.

We have a campus safety office...
We have a campus safety office located centrally on campus. Generally the officers are very helpful. There have been a few thefts in some of the academic buildings, but I have not seen too many problems with crime on campus. We have some blue-light emergency posts around campus, and we have an emergency alert system that sounds from a central location on our (small) campus. We also have text messaging alerts for emergencies or to notify us of campus closings.

The security people have never really harassed anyone for stupid things, but the presence of Campus Safety is definitely felt. I’ve never felt tense or unsafe walking around campus, even in the middle of the night. |

I have personally dealt with Campus Safety when my car was hit. They were able to use the newly installed video cameras to find out who hit it. The officers are very nice and truly out to help the students, even though they do write all those parking tickets. |
