Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

After a few months here, a 70 degree Monday followed by a 30 degree Tuesday followed by a hailstorm, snowstorm, and flash flood on Wednesday will cease to faze you. Just make sure you come prepared with your umbrella, rainboots, and plenty of winter gear. Sure, you'll experience all four seasons; they just might not  always seem to come in order.

The school year will start out warm (usually in the 80s) in the fall. Tinker is the only dorm with air conditioning, so if you live anywhere else, make sure you bring a fan (or three). Then, a month or so into the semester, you'll know the most stunning season at Hollins has arrived by the "crunch, crunch, crunch" of feet on leaves. Hollins will transform from a clean, pretty campus to a gorgeous, I-think-my-heart-just-stopped Autumn wonderland exploding with color. There's a good reason the Admissions office hosts the prospecetive student open house in November!

In December and January, everyone excitedly awaits the arrival of snow, and as soon as a storm hits, students race to one of the many rolling hills on campus to sled. Winter temperatures hang around until the end of March, and then spring ushers in a period of itchy eyes and running noses for many students on campus (so add a box of tissues to your packing list.)  Bottom line: It's better to overpack than underpack during your first year because you never know what kind of weather will hit the campus from day to day, or even hour to hour.

Beautiful or Cloudy, Roanoke's Two Weather Choices

Roanoke is nice because of its beautiful mountains and moderate weather. Back when the entire country was buried in snow, we were hardly touched, and in the summer it stays in the high 80's low 90's. In the fall, however, it can rain for weeks on end, so it's not a good place if you get depressed when it's cloudy.

Minimal Snowing

It does not really snow here. And when we get a few inches, classes get canceled. This caused students who come from very snowy regions to laugh. On a nice day, we would lay down on the grass and just enjoy the warmth.
