College Prowler Take
You’ll experience all four seasons in Roanoke, VA. The temperature and weather patterns stay fairly temperate. So don’t expect blazing summers or feet of snow. Do expect gorgeous natural beauty. The Blue Ridge Mountains boast brilliant reds, auburns, and yellows in the fall, and pale greens and pastels in the spring. The local foliage is breathtaking. On particularly lovely days, students will pour onto the Front Quad to enjoy the outdoors. Hollins will usually get four or five inches of snow each year. It makes the campus look even more graceful and pretty than it usually does. Once in a while, the snow will be enough to cancel classes, and students will celebrate with a day of sledding down one of the many rolling hills. Bring clothes for all sorts of weather, and definitely remember that umbrella, as Hollins sees a lot of spring showers. Most of the class buildings have good temperature control. Tinker is the only dorm that is air-conditioned. However, the older buildings have high ceilings and large windows that provide good air circulation. A fan is enough during the day, and the nights get somewhat chilly. During the winter, the radiators in the older buildings provide plenty of heat, but they sure are loud. It’s not always easy to catch some shuteye with all those clanking pipes.

It seems to rain a lot, so definitely bring an umbrella, and I would suggest investing in a pair of rain boots. The weather also tends to be windy, so even when the weather is warm, you might need a jacket.

It is best to pack for all types of weather. The warmer months are usually sunny and very nice and not really ovecast. The winters can be cold because of the mountains and wind. The wind is definitely something to get used to if you are from a non-windy place. A good pair of rain boots are good to bring for the days it does rain.

The weather is fairly cold in the winter, but it snows very little. In the summer and spring, it is humid. The heating and air in all of the buildings do not work too well, so wear layers.

It’s warm until the end of October, then bring on the sweaters and rain jackets. It snows occasionally and sometimes enough to cancel classes. The snow on campus is really pretty. We don’t have a lot of roads around to muck it up, so it all stays white. Hollins puts up twinkle lights in December that look especially good when snow falls. |

The falls are the absolute best here. The air feels really clear, and the trees are vibrant. When we all climb Tinker Mountain on Tinker Day, looking down on the Roanoke Valley is like looking at a painting. It’s almost unreal how beautiful it all is. |
