Tips for Earning Credits
Bring a resume with your previous employment, volunteer experience, any previous school transcripts, and your skills when meeting up with your counselor.
Academic/Testing Requirements
Houston Community College is an open admissions school. Upon registration, most students are referred to the testing center where they take placement tests such as the TSI. These tests help determine your entry level in various subjects and help exempt you from courses you are qualified in.
Transferring Credits In & Out
Follow the transfer course equivalency guide from the university you desire to attend, and file a degree plan for financial aid and for your academic experience at Houston Community College. Students usually need between 60 and 66 credits to transfer out with an associate degree.
Work & Life Experience Credits
Bring in documentations that show your old test scores and performance at work; transcripts and resumes usually suffice. Previous time in the military may opt you out of some classes or an internship.
Typical Session Length
A regular term normally lasts 16 weeks; the "second start" semester is only 12 weeks long. Mini-sessions can be between three and four weeks long and usually occur between regular semesters. Summer sessions are six weeks each.
Class Style & Structure
The average class has between 25 and 35 students and meets at least twice per week. Classes with labs usually have three-hour lectures followed by one hour of lab time. Each class has up to four tests and papers, along with a final exam and occasionally an oral presentation or group project. Homework and study materials are always assigned throughout the semester.
Course Registration Process
You can register online or in person at any HCC campus. You do not have to register at the campus where you wish to take courses.
