There are always policemen around campus, but their presence is by no means overwhelming. Unless they’ve been invited to give speeches or administer specific warnings to students, there isn’t much interaction between the campus police and the students. When students do commit minor violations like illegal parking, officers are usually somewhat understanding, all depending on the nature of the violation. Since most parties are off campus, in clubs, or someone’s house, the school’s social scene is somewhat detached from the rest of the campus. Sometimes you have to look for the parties, but they are there, and there’s little chance of the city police or campus police coming to break it up, unless of course something goes wrong and someone at the party actually calls them for help.

On the occasions that students have been caught violating the University’s code of conduct—which includes a zero-tolerance policy for weapons, drugs, and alcohol on the campus—they are either suspended or expelled, as dictated by the policy. These instances, however, are few and far between, because every Howard student realizes that they operate within a circle of trust. And once you find yourself outside of the circle’s circumference, there’s no going back.

Strictness at Howard

They are strict and put too much attention where they shouldn't. We have very strict visitation rules for the dorms. I think this should not be such a high area of focus. They can worry more about protecting students from criminals then protecting them from having fun from one another.

HU's Rules

Howard University is strict when it comes to obeying the rules. If students are caught drinking or smoking on campus they are immediately considered to withdraw from school
