Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At Howard, the best existing facilities are probably the libraries, the cafeterias, the student center, the science labs and departments, the athletic department, and the School of Business. This is due mostly to the fact that these buildings and facilities are either fairly new in comparison to some of the other buildings that have been built as early as 1867, have been renovated, or had new components added as of late. Generally, all the facilities on campus are well-maintained and much of campus receives high praise from students. However, there are some classrooms in some of the more sparsely populated departments—like English and history—that are in less-than-ideal condition. Even though no one can say whether this is because of an oversight on the part of the administration or a matter of priorities, the fact still remains that there is a definite disparity between the condition of some departments over others at Howard.

There is an abundance and variety of dining facilities on and around the campus. Also, there are a few charming campus cafeterias, as well as several independent food vendors sprinkled around in strategic spots, as well as the national and international restaurant options that you would expect to find in any major city.

Love the Campus Activities and Facilities.

Howard is closed to everything I need. Historic city with great museums to visit. The campus is clean and I love the Drew Hall dorm. It is closed to everything I need.

Athletic Center and Libraries

The athletic centers are not up to standards for the amount of money that is put into Howard University. I believe the athletic department needs to be updates with better gyms and weight lifting facilities. Also, the football field could be better. I think the school needs to invest in it's sports and athletic department as a whole. The libraries are also an issue. I think they can renovate and still keep the historical look of the main library, Founders Library. The inside of it makes students not even want to go in there to look for books. Many students I come in contact with do not use the library on campus, just the graduate libraries.

Libraries

The libraries on campus are useful. My favorite is Founders Library because of its historical significance. There is even a mini museum inside. If you are a student who needs absolute silence when studying, Founders is the place for you. The building is very spacious with many nooks for you to disappear in. If you are more social, or you need to meet with a group for a project then the Undergraduate Library (UGL) is sufficient. This library very popular among students. Some of the chairs and tables are a little dated but you'll survive.

Favorite Things To Do

Students generally find their own fun, whether it is attending Friday Night Live in the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel or in the game room of the Armour J. Blackburn center. Often time’s new movies will be shown at Cramton Auditorium, free of charge to Howard Students as long as they present their student identification cards. There are also sporting events held on campus, ranging from intramural basketball to soccer matches in Greene Stadium.

Students like to attend the movie screenings in Cramton Auditorium, but those events are not usually highly publicized so students have to look out for them. During the spring semester when the weather is consistently warm, students like to grab a blanket and hang out on the Yard. Additionally, there are instances when well-known authors come to the bookstore to do book signings or hold symposiums.

Did You Know?

Over the summer of 2008, the biology building underwent renovations resulting in a new greenhouse.
