Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Make copies of every document.
  • Not to bring a car!
  • Picking classes and sections located relatively close to each other rather than zigzagging back and forth across the campus will benefit everyone.
  • Signing up for Dining Dollars instead of a structured meal plan is usually a pretty good idea.
  • That everyone should see their advisor at least once a semester.
  • That I wouldn’t always be able to count on the administration.
  • The people in the Administration Building are by no means the easiest people to deal with.
  • There are a lot of large classes.
Tips to Succeed
  • Always make copies of everything.
  • Cultivate consistent study habits, for instance, actually complete the assigned readings before you come to class, because when your professor says you’re responsible for the information, you had better believe they’re not kidding.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
  • Make sure your professor knows who you are.
  • Never take professors’ understanding and accommodating attitude for granted.
  • Plan a schedule you can comfortably work with.
  • Take advantage of your professor's office hours.
  • Visit your advisor regularly.

The Social Scene

The social scene at Howard University is unlike any other. Being is a large city has its advantages. You may walk, take the train or the bus to anywhere you need to go. There are clubs and bars everywhere. Parties go on every weekend, giving you the chance to meet new people at any given moment.

Amazing Student Body

Although people have their quarrels with the university, the one thing that stands out is the student body. People here are the epitome of multitasking college student. Everyone is intelligent and focused on academics, yet they find the time to party there a++ off on the weekends.

The MECCA

Howard University is the top HBCU. We have a lot of history and our legacy is remarkable. We are top rated in academics with non HBCUs. We take pride in creating the best African American individuals in society. Campus life is also amazing. There is ALWAYS something to do, most of the time too much! Howard is known for being fun. The networking you will receive while at Howard is probably the most valuable thing about the school.

Traditions
  • Alternative Spring Break (ASB): Each year during spring break, students have the option to travel to a pre-determined location to help with the restoration of that area. Past locations include New Orleans, Chicago, and Detroit.
  • Bison Ball: The Bison Ball is a yearly event hosted by the Howard University Student Association for the purpose of honoring the accomplishments of individual students and student organizations on campus. It’s a really big event, and even people who aren’t getting awards flock to it.
  • Fine Arts Walk of Fame: In recognition of the role that fine arts play in society, the Fine Arts Walk of Fame features bronze stars, each with an outstanding alumnus’ name along with a circle showing what area of the fine arts they excelled in. It’s a great way to officially recognize and retain the memory of alumni who have made great contributions in their field for students who come after them.
  • Founders’ Walk: A pathway leading to Howard Hall, one of the oldest buildings on the campus and home to the National Alumni Center, with the names of alumni and individuals who have played significant roles in the University’s history engraved in the bricks it is paved with.
  • Homecoming: If Howard is known for nothing else, it’s known for the grandiose homecomings. Homecoming is always a themed event that spans one week. Each year people from all over the nation flock to Howard University’s campus to experience the homecoming festivities. The two biggest events, however, is the fashion show and the step show. Homecoming is well worth the wait each year.
  • Howard Players: The Players have been a prominent part of the Department of Theatre Arts since 1919. When they were first established, they specialized in the production of plays on Negro life written by students and others, and they have continued the legacy of showcasing the extraordinary writing talents of students in the department; producing such theater giants as Ossie Davis and Debbie Allen.
  • ResFest: Each year during the spring semester the Office of Residence Life puts on an entire week of various events. Students from each dorm are encouraged to participate in various activities such as: flag football, stroll and step team, debate team, and dodge ball among other activities. The winner of the step competition then performs in the fall semester at the step show for homecoming.
  • Spring Black Arts Festival: Organized by the Undergraduate Student Assembly, this yearly, week-long event features movies, dance, poetry, a fashion show, and other celebrations of the arts. There’s a different theme every year, and it’s an exciting event to be a part of.
  • The Yard: Students are reminded every day of all the great leaders and individuals who have walked this same yard by the names and initials carved into trees and bricks.
