Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When night falls and it’s time to get your party on, there are a few things to do on campus. Student organizations often host parties during the school year. Compared to other national universities, Howard is not that big of a drinking school. Now, that is not to say that HU students don’t know how to have a good time. Dancing and socializing are definitely big, and most students do frequent a lot of hip-hop and dance clubs in the area, namely Love and Fur. Homecoming, which occurs every year in the third week of October, is a can’t-miss event and has been known to draw hundreds of alumni and students from schools all over the country, especially other HBCUs. Even if you’re not yet 21, you can still enjoy DC’s nightlife, because many of the clubs cater to those who are 18 and older on certain nights.

If you don’t feel like partying, there’s a still lot of stuff to do at night or during any other free time that you may have. For instance, several dance classes are available at HU (salsa, belly-dancing, line-dancing, and tango, just to name a few.) There is always something new to do on campus, and few grow tired of going out in the city. In fact, when students are about to graduate, they usuallly come to the realization that they’ve barely scratched the surface of things to do at Howard and in DC.

Both House Parties & Clubs Can Be Fun...Choose Wisely

Clubs are fun. If I were you I would only go to parties sponsored by Howard Students. If it is a Howard Sponsored party there are shuttles to the club and back. I prefer to go to a house party, but sometime they get shut doown. Never pay any more than $3 for a house party, because more than likely it will be shut down in a hour. Then you pay $3 more for the next house party. If you pay any more than $3 for a house party you have been ripped off. Always go to socials. Social are parties on campus. It will usually have the name of the dorm, for example, "Slowe social".

Welcome to Washington, DC

I am not a big city person. I am from New Jersey, have family in New York and absolutely hate it, so DC was nothing special to me. However, I admit that I enjoy the culture and ability to have more to do. In NY, in order to have a good time you basically have to be 21 for everything. However, in DC many clubs will let you party at 18 (still 21 for drinking), there are numerous free events that go on during the day within the parks, and transportation is pretty decent. Not to mention, if you live in Howard's dorms, or simply have a twitter account, finding out what the next move for the night is pretty easy. There are groups on campus that are notorious for having big parties, such as the Dream Team, that will even sell tickets to the events on campus.

I have to admit that even though the transportation can be simple, it has it's moments of frustration. For example, many people like to party all night long, just remember that the metro closes at 3am on weekends and then you have to be careful walking back to wherever you live. Also, campus shuttles to and from different buildings end around the same time (even though there is campus escorts all night long). For the people with cars, parking can be easy, but tricky. There may be times where all weekend long you get the same spot, but others where parking is truly a nightmare. Living in the city is always going to have its ups and downs but for the most part the nightlife is pretty live in DC.

Duh Your in DC

There are so many places to chose from. Going to Howard you will be close to house parties, clubs, and lounges. I enjoy the lounge scene the most. I also find it easier to find places for 21+, however there are some places for 18+.
