College Prowler Take

There is practically a restaurant, or five, on every block in the District, each one presenting a wide variety of options to choose from. Depending on what neighborhood you are in, you could eat cuisine and experience the culinary culture of 10 different countries, all without leaving a single block! A few good examples of some of these spots would be the U Street neighborhood, Adams Morgan, Georgetown, and Dupont Circle, among others. When you take into consideration the typical student’s budget, the more viable restaurants would be in U Street and Adams Morgan, which not only hold the advantage of being but a few blocks away from the campus, but are also kinder to your wallet, as opposed to the pricier Georgetown restaurants. Also, the closer to the campus a restaurant is, the more likely it is to be open late.

Of all the great restaurants to visit, Tropicana, a Jamaican takeout restaurant on U Street, is a must, with great food, huge portions, and great prices. Some runner-ups include Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries, not far from campus. These options are great for eating on the move, but for those times that you want to have a three-course meal at a nice sit-down restaurant, some good places include Buca di Beppo and Mar de Plata. The bottom line is: you’ll have opportunities to try new types of cuisine, but there’s an excellent chance that in DC you will be able to find anything you’re craving, all within a reasonable range of prices.

DC is a really good city to eat in. No matter what your food preferences or idiosyncrasies are, it’s easy to find a restaurant or snack shop that serves what you like without it costing you an arm and a leg. I much prefer going to eat in places like Georgetown or Adams Morgan than eating on campus because of the variety and the atmosphere of the restaurants there. Another great neighborhood to eat in is the U Street Corridor, which has many good international restaurants; Thai Tanic is one of my favorites, even though some of the prices are kind of steep.

There’s a very good selection of places to eat for students off campus. Some of the best places to eat are really close to the main campus. Take China Wonder—it is a very good Chinese restaurant where you can get something nice to eat for like five dollars.

There are a lot of good fast food restaurants and fantastic restaurants in the city and around the general area of the campus. The food is good and cheap and always in good quantity. One of the places I would recommend is Five Guys Burgers and Fries; their burgers are heavenly.

Off-campus dining is the best. There’s a lot of variety, good food, and good prices, but you have to be careful where you eat because some places have had health inspection issues in the past and have been closed down repeatedly because of them.

The food off campus is better than the food on campus, in my opinion, just because there are so many international restaurants all over DC, and the variety is unbeatable. Some restaurants are very expensive, just like everything else in the city, but some of them are friendly to students’ budgets. A good one would be Tropicana Carry Out, a Jamaican restaurant that has portions that are good for two or three meals.
