College Prowler Take

Simply put, parking anywhere in DC is a nightmare, and Howard’s campus is no exception. The University even goes so far as to discourage students from bringing a car to campus. Students who live on campus have an easier time parking because there are parking garages assigned for the dorms. Those who live off campus, however, have to work harder to get to school on time, so as to snag a parking spot before they are all taken. The University provides a parking registration system for students, which operates after the spring semester of each school year when you can register to be awarded one of the very limited $240 per year parking assignments for a dorm or a University-designated parking lot. Other than that, you’re on your own. There are so many reserved, and otherwise restricted, parking spots that getting towed or ticketed at least once throughout the school year is practically a given.

On the positive side, you don’t really need a car to live in DC. The Metro system will take you where you need to go faster than a car would, considering the congested traffic that has been known to cause massive fits of road rage from time to time. There’s the Metrorail/Metrobus system, various city-wide shuttles, the Marc train, and so on. Depending on where you want to go and how fast you want to get there, they are all viable options for getting around the city and beyond. Just do yourself a favor and don’t bring a car to Howard, or anywhere else in DC for that matter.

Parking is absolutely horrendous at Howard. People get tickets like it's nothing, and I would definitely recommend that freshmen leave the cars at home.

It’s one of the most horrible things about being here. The worst part is that even if you find one of the very few free parking spots around, you can only park there for like two hours, so what’s the point if you have a three-hour class or a five-hour block of classes?

It’s not great, because the University is in the city so it is overcrowded with vehicles. Don’t drive unless you have to, and you really don’t have to because there is the train and buses, and you can also rent a Zipcar because they guarantee you a parking spot on campus.

Parking is horrible on campus. Students get a lot of tickets, boots, locks, and their cars towed for parking violations. I wouldn’t recommend parking. Just take the Metro or live close enough to campus to walk.

It’s terrible. It’s not even fair that there’s so little parking with the number of students who live off campus. It’s very frustrating when you get through all of DC traffic only to come to campus and still miss class because you couldn’t find a place to park. I heard that they were going to build new parking lots, but I haven’t seen any construction or anything that says that’s true.
