Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Students are more than satisfied with the quality of education that they are receiving at Howard. Students seem to have no trouble meshing with their peers, as well as the faculty. In fact, the only qualm that students seem to have is experiencing the difficulties of dealing with HU administration. The bureaucracy and red tape involved with getting anything done at the administrative level is nothing short of nerve racking, and the race to ensure that your financial aid is administered on time and paperwork properly entered into the system is probably more effective for rapid weight loss than any weight loss program currently being advertised. But even with all the little frustrations that come with dealing with the administration, there is a firm consensus among the students that there is no better place for them to be than where they are now. From the quality of the relationships they have formed to the quality of the education that they are receiving, as well as the numerous opportunities made available to them, HU students are pretty darn happy. Overall, Howard provides the ideal atmosphere for anyone who’s interested in politics or pursuing a career that’s in any way relevant to the process of developing public policy.

Howard is often referred to as the mecca, or the center of every Historically Black College or University in the nation, and the unified pride that the students have in its history and what it represents is very real and very substantial. While there’s no denying that there is room for improvement on many levels, the important thing is that Howard University is expanding on the good and improving on the not-so-good—constantly striving to become better with each passing year. More importantly, most students feel like they can be a valuable, contributing part of this process.

Not the School for Me

Howard University is not the school for me. I have not enjoyed my stay here which sucks because I'm on scholarship. I plan on transferring to Georgia State University.

The Ups and Downs of Freshman Life at HU

The city itself makes the school experience worthy of my decision to attend Howard, the rich heritage of this institution makes me proud; however, the diversity is not what I'd hope for, the financial aid officers are RUDE, and more than often, UNAVAILABLE! The food is really great, as is the nightlife. The teachers are knowledgeable but there are some who are hard to understand, due to their dialect, which is problematic.

No Place Like Home

Silly me. I had left and gone to Howard without a clue as to what an HBCU was and what kind of experiences I would have. A lot of people say that the friends that you meet in college are friends for a lifetime, they never lied. I've been through the worst at Howard; getting purged, having no housing, etc. But because of the people I surround myself with and their unconditional support, I have made it this far. Howard has become my first home. Watching the alumni return for Homecoming gives me great pride in my school and makes me anxious to celebrate my first Homecoming after I graduate. ResFest when all the dorms compete against each other in various events from step to pageants is nothing short of a family reunion when everyone is competing against each other. Watching the yard fill with vibrant colors from tours being given to prospective/newly admitted students as the divine nine probates take place in the Spring semester is one of my favorite things to do. It's a picture perfect moment. But nothing else will ever be comparable the first few steps you take on campus freshman week. It's like once you move in, you'll never want to move out. And of course, this is why I stayed.
