There Are Barely Any Guys!

Howard has WAY TOO MANY females on campus. Females make up about 75% of the population. So obviously there are not enough males to go around. You also have to account for the fact that there are guys who are not attracted to females, the guys who try to date multiple girls, and the guys who are already in exclusive relationships. So in the end, that means there's about 20 available guys on campus. Of those 20 young men, they are mostly nice, pretty down to earth, and stylish. However, for guys who are interested in coming to Howard, you will have a plethora of women to choose from. They are all gorgeous and fashionable. However, you will have to get past some of the snobby girls to find the good ones.

Howard Computers

There are two iLabs on campus, one of which is open 24 hours a day. They are very helpful and you can print in them for free. The libraries also have computers and printing services. All of the computers in the labs and libraries are very nice. The wireless network can be a bit sketchy at times, especially depending on where you live on campus. Most students have their own computers, it makes taking notes in class so much easier. Not a lot of people have their own printers, but they do come in handy when you need to print something at the last minute.

Howard

Being in DC is so much fun and there's so much to do. I love being able to go to the Smithsonian museums whenever I have some free time. Many areas of the city are really beautiful; however, the neighborhood that Howard is in is not very good. There are often cases of robbery while students are out around the campus at night. The local community feels that Howard does not do enough to assist them and to improve the community, but that is not true. Howard goes out into the community and has youth outreach programs. Many of the students are always willing to participate in any type of volunteer opportunity that is offered in the surrounding community or elsewhere. Overall if you take the necessary safety precautions and keep an eye on your back you should be fine. Howard does offer shuttle services and escort services so that students don't have to walk around campus by themselves (especially at night).

Caught Between a Rock and a Dorm Someplace

Off-Campus housing is tricky, but necessary at Howard. There are always listings close to campus, but the prices don't always match the quality. There is a Housing complex called UTC further out that is excellent! Great rooms and location, near restaurants and a metro station. Howard even offers a shuttle to and from the complex.

Even though Howard's student population is primarily African-descent, there are a plethera of varying backgrounds that come together on this campus. Not only do you meet individuals from coast to coast, but you also meet people on an international scope as well. Howard's diversity of both thougt and regional culture contribute to the greatness that this university has to offer.

Journalism Department at Howard

The journalism department here at Howard is very good and the process was somewhat difficult but one that I felt was necessary.

Academic Programs

Howard provides a variety of programs so you can find just about every major you can think of. Also, Howard promotes academic excellence, and students take pride in themselves and their studies.

Howard University Nightlife

Howard is also known as a party school. If you're under 21, there are tons of house parties and clubs who throw 18+ parties; but that limits you to stay within the Howard community. The 21+ spots, enables you mingle with just about anyone living in the DMV.

Keep a Well Stocked Fridge

Howard literally has the worst dining services. Not only is the food nasty but the places that serve food are never open. Lunch is only from 12-2, so if you have a class you're out of luck. Dinner ends at 9:00 every weeknight and 6:00 on weekends. If you don't have food in your dorm you will starve.

The Social Scene

Because Howard University is located in our nation's capitol, there is no limit to the type of nightlife that can be found near campus. U Street, located less than five minutes from of the dorms, is noted for its bars and clubs. Other venues, such as The Ultrabar, Love Nightclub, and Fur, partner with Howard students, hosting parties. Shuttles to and from the club to are often provided from the club. Howard parties thrown at these clubs typically only require a student ID, thus allowing underage students to party as well. Other universities also promote parties on Howard's campus and are metro-accessible.

Greek Presence

There are Greeks around and you definitely notice their presence, but they don't overwhelm the atmosphere. The organizations blend nicely into the university and their tradition is admirable.

Not the School for Me

Howard University is not the school for me. I have not enjoyed my stay here which sucks because I'm on scholarship. I plan on transferring to Georgia State University.

In the Nation's Capitol

Whether you like to visit cool museums and monuments, or you like to party. There is always something to do around and off Howard's campus. With all of the gentrification going on, the direct surrounding area is a lot safer than it was in the past. There are so many night clubs and cool lounges...every college students dream.

Extreme Temperatures

In DC, it gets really hot in the summertime and really cold in the wintertime. I don't mind the heat but the cold and snow can be unbearable!

Police Force Is Great

The police force at Howard University is really strict. They make sure that there are no problems on campus and they are always around if someone has a problem. I feel safe on campus because the police are very helpful and they check around the campus to make sure that there are no problems with individuals.

The MECCA

Howard University is the top HBCU. We have a lot of history and our legacy is remarkable. We are top rated in academics with non HBCUs. We take pride in creating the best African American individuals in society. Campus life is also amazing. There is ALWAYS something to do, most of the time too much! Howard is known for being fun. The networking you will receive while at Howard is probably the most valuable thing about the school.

One Single Rule

Living on campus at Howard University is truly a blessing because it is not guaranteed, so any housing is better than none. Living on campus freshmen year is perfect because the freshmen dorms are closest to main campus. Sophomore year, most students choose to live in Meridian Hill Hall which is a short shuttle ride away, or approximately a 15 minute walk from main campus. The cost is pretty high, but it is easier for most students to live in a dorm than to try to convince their parents to lease a house in the area. Real estate in DC is anything but cheap. The social atmosphere of dorms may prove to be distracting to some, but it's all a part of the Howard experience. Housing priority is based on RSVP points, which are calculated by GPA and campus involvement in activities. I have no complaints about housing at Howard University thus far, except the visitation policy. This mostly effects freshmen girls and boys who live in single-sex buildings, but the majority of undergraduates would agree that for the price of housing, visitors of either sex should be allowed at any hour. The fact that there is a visitation policy is frustrating to most students because it is the one rule that students struggle to understand. At Howard, it appears as though there aren't any rules concerning any student activity except visitation. We're almost completely free.

Diverse for an HBCU

Most people think there's no diversity an HBCU, but that's not the case at Howard. Almost everyone is black, but every state, religion, and ethnicity is represented. There is also a sizable LGBT presence. There is a group for everyone at Howard.

Stay Cautious

Howard University is located in a rather precarious spot in DC, and it is not always safe. Never walk alone late at night, and always stay vigilant, especially if you're a girl. As long as you make sensible decisions, you shouldn't have any trouble.

I'm a Radiation therapy at Howard University. This is a good program and with good administration. There is lots of work and get clinical experience.

Howard University: Health $ Safety

The location of Howard is in Washington DC, which can be a unsafe place. Coming from the south, I never understood until I moved here why people didn't talk and smile as much up north it's simply due to your safety. You never know what kind of a person someone is so you can't be extra friendly to everyone. I generally feel the most safe when I'm walking with a group of people, although I choose to travel alone most the time. Health is great because as students we get free visits to our medical center and there's an Howard University hospital just a few blocks up.

Girls Look Good

They all pretty much dress to impress everyday and when they want to look even better they do. There are so many you cant help but have attractive ones.
