College Prowler Take

The District often has rather erratic weather patterns, with one year being warm or downright sweltering all the way from May to December, and the next bitterly cold as early as mid-August. Usually, though, the four seasons are pretty constant, and the weather is comfortably in the middle of these two extremes. It doesn’t rain or snow often or very severely, so classes are rarely affected by the weather. The University takes its cue from the federal government, so no matter what the weather is like, if the federal government is open, school will remain open.

During the hot and humid summer days, everyone is grateful for the frigid air conditioning in the classrooms and dorms, and because most Howard girls are never afraid to show lots of skin, it’s not uncommon to see them carrying around jackets on the Yard in 90-degree weather, only to put them on as they step inside a building. Something useful to know about the way air is controlled in the buildings is the fact that the mechanical staff turn the heat and air conditioning on and off based on a set calendar schedule and not what the weather is like. So, for instance, if there should be a hot day in December, as has happened in the past, chances are, the heat will still be on in the buildings.

It’s strange, I’m still trying to get used to the difference between DC and where I’m originally from in Madison, Wisconsin. It always feels warm or hot to me, even in the winter sometimes, and the snow hardly ever stays on the ground.

The weather here is okay. Nothing major really ever happens. Sometimes it’s really hot or really cold, but it’s normal most of the time.

Never completely rely on the weather report you hear on the news. DC weather has a way of defying the reports, especially when it comes to snowstorms. There are not a lot, but we have had some really debilitating ones in the past that meteorologists didn’t see coming.

The weather is fine. Not too cold, sometimes really hot, but usually not too hot. It’s very humid in the summer, but if you drink a lot of water and wear really light and loose clothes, you should be good to go.

It is always so unpredictable, especially in the winter. The day starts out as if it’s going to be freezing, and then by afternoon you’re sweating in your leather jacket.
