Living off-campus is the best choice for HSU.
It is way more affordable than on campus. There are plenty of different areas to choose from, that all range.
We are a college town, so no matter where you decide to live, it is most likely in an area of people your age.

The great thing about this area is the neighboring towns are within minutes of each other. Keep this in mind when house hunting. If you choose Arcata, you better have some money. If you are on a budget, go to McKinleyville where it's safer, more family oriented, cheaper and have dishwashers! It's only 5-10 minutes from HSU and there are plenty of bus stops wherever you choose. Try to stay away from Eureka, the traffic is always terrible. The school doesn't have much in regards to off campus housing help. They have a small, unpublicized website of ads for rooms and apartments for rent. Huge downside is you must pay a monthly fee to post your ad so there's not many options. Stick to Craigslist.

The houses up here are dirt cheap as compared to the Bay Area. I only hope they still have available options when it comes time to actually move in. Furthermore, there's a bulletin board with postings of roommate/housing offers in our Housing Center. Houses range from very close to several miles away.

My experience is generally a good one so far. My house was easy to find, it was only the second one I looked at. Our landlord is flaky but the house is cozy and priced somewhat fairly.
