College Prowler Take
Unlike most campuses or buildings in New York City, Hunter is open, so literally anybody can walk in. The only time you need your ID is to get into the library or computer lab. That doesn’t mean the campus isn’t safe. In fact, students feel very safe getting to and from class. CUNY has its own security force, and personnel are always located at main entrances to the buildings that are open late at night. Unlike the main campus, the dorm, which is located on Brookdale Campus, is not open to the public. Security is strict on who enters the dorm, and you need an ID with a residence sticker in order to get in, unless you are a guest of a resident. The guest policy for the dorms is pretty tight as well, stricter than most city campuses. What lacks uptown may be made up for downtown at the dorm. Overall, students feel very safe on campus. The city itself gets a bad rep, but it is one of the safest large cities, and the areas where the dorm and main campus are located are two of the safest in the city. Despite the security presence on campus, Hunter still lacks standard security measures, such as card swipes into buildings, though that is potentially in the works. Leaving your room or valuables unattended may have unfortunate consequences as well, though that can be said for any area where iPods or laptops are at stake.

I’ve never been asked for my ID...
I’ve never been asked for my ID when entering any of the buildings, but it seems to work out somehow. I feel safe on campus, most of the time (not considering the times when you have to stay there late, like 11ish at night). |

Campus Is Safe - Though
B+
I've never felt unsafe anywhere at Hunter - to get into the Dorms you have to show ID, and all guests must show an ID and be signed in on the computer system. Though that system isn't in place at the Hunter Main campus, it seems as though they're working toward a system where you'd have to swipe in to get into the Hunter buildings (many other colleges in New York City already have a similar system in place). The one major concern is petty theft, especially at the dorm. You might feel like it's safe to leave your things out, it is after all, your home, but since everyone has singles and only a small portion of Hunter students actually live at the dorm, there isn't the same sense of community you would find in the dorms of other college classes. Leave your laptop in the common room or your pots and dishes in the kitchen, and they may very well be stolen!

I see campus security officers...
I see campus security officers around, but I don’t know exactly what they do besides make their presence known. I can say that I feel safe most of the time, and perhaps it’s a good sign that I don’t see the security guards working too hard. |

For now, it’s an open campus....
For now, it’s an open campus. However, I believe that we are in the process of becoming a closed campus, like every other college in the city where you have to have a Hunter ID to enter the building. For the most part, I do not see security guards patrolling the hallways and classrooms, which I like. The only times you need an ID is to utilize computer labs or enter the library. I have never felt unsafe at Hunter. I do hear of some property theft, though, from time to time. |
