College Prowler Take

Since a lot of students may be at Hunter for a good part of their day, food becomes very important. Both Uptown around the main campus and Downtown around the dorms (for that small population of dorm residents), there’s enough variety to keep you satisfied—Indian, Thai, pizza, burgers, vegetarian options, salads, and sandwiches. A number of places offer Hunter students a discount; they won’t ask you if you’re a student, though, so be ready with your ID when you pay. Near the dorms, there are many places that deliver, so you won’t have to trek in the rain for your Chinese food.

After four years of going to the school, the places around the campus will either become like a second home, or avoided. For those that like their fast food, the closest McDonald’s or Wendy’s is on 1st Avenue, not exactly convenient if you’re between classes. Nevertheless, there is no reason to complain about a lack of places to eat; if you do, you haven’t looked hard enough.

The restaurants off campus are great. There is a wide variety to choose from. You can find pretty much anything you’re looking for, and prices range from very reasonable to expensive. Even the street vendors sell pretty good food. I highly recommend going to Pax for healthy but very good food. They sell amazing salads.

There is always good food a few blocks away. The Thai place, which is on 65th, I think is pretty good. Corrado Bakery is expensive but so good, it’s worth it once and a while. The Hunter Deli on 69th is also good and pretty cheap.

Did You Know?

The area on Lexington Avenue from about 28th to 33rd Streets, only a few minute’s walk from the dorms, is known as Curry Hill because of the abundance of Indian restaurants.

Publications such as the Village Voice come out with cheap eat guides to the city each year, perfect for college students.

Every year, around mid-September, Little Italy experiences the Feast of San Gennaro. It’s all the sausage and cannolis you can handle.
