College Prowler Take
As already mentioned, Hunter College has its own subway stop. Taking the 6 train to 68th Street brings you directly to the campus. It makes the commute a little bit easier to deal with, considering the school is so easy to get to. When traveling about town, public transportation gets you anywhere you need to go. Buses and subway trains run consistently during the day (at night, be prepared for less frequent service) and follow a very comprehensible, if at first confusing, system. (If buying a map, get one that is laminated and unfolds to a manageable size. Don’t be ashamed of it either; it will be your best friend until you learn the lines.) The transportation system isn’t immune to New Yorkers’ scorn. Crowded trains, disrupted service, and multiple transfers can get to even the most patient of people. They come with the package, though, and for the most part, it gets you where you need to go quickly and easily.

The subway stops directly under the school (you don’t even have to go outside in bad weather), and bus stops are on most of the corners all around the school. |

Hunter is in New York City, which probably has the best public transportation of any city in the country. (I’m not saying it’s perfect, mind you.) You can pretty much get to anywhere from anywhere. The hard part is getting out of New York City, although most New Yorkers don’t seem to mind. |

New York City has the best public...
New York City has the best public transportation system in the world, so unless you really want to blow your money, you never ‘have’ to spring for a cab or appoint a designated driver. Come on, tons of people ride the subways while in an altered state of mind—just be careful, you’ll be fine. That being said, the nearest subway is five blocks. Honestly, it takes 10 minutes, and the main campus is on the same line. If we get a 2nd Avenue subway, it will improve markedly. Write to your elected officials. |
On-Campus Transportation
The shuttle runs hourly between Brookdale and the main campus at the corner of 68th Street and Lexington Avenue. It leaves the Brookdale Campus (425 E. 25th St.) on the half hour, beginning at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 9:25 p.m. No service is available from 12 p.m.–12:30 p.m. Monday–Thursday, after 1 p.m. on Fridays, and on weekends. Be prepared to show your Hunter ID in order to use the bus service.
