College Prowler Take

The quality of ISU’s campus housing varies. Some of the dorms are well-kept and maintained; other dorms have more problems. Turner Hall is definitely the dorm to live in to get to know a lot of different people. The men-only and women-only dorms are more intimate and not as crazy. The dorms are also more convenient for students with classes on upper campus, as there are not any dorms located on lower campus right now. But the dorms are located close to Reed Gym, so that is always good motivation. The Rendezvous Center provides 72 apartments with 301 beds. This is a huge, much-needed addition for ISU housing. There have been some complaints from the community and faculty about the facility costing a lot of money that is needed elsewhere, but students will definitely have more opportunities for luxurious housing. With most students living off campus, this may just be the thing to get students more involved with what is happening on campus. It will also bring students together, as they will be living in a more tight-knit community in the same building. This is a facility that will surely bring more students to ISU.

They are pretty expensive because you have to buy the meal plan. Students have to pay for a semester’s worth of meals all at once, so it seems like they are expensive.

The dorms are decaying and expensive, and the food is horrible.

The dorms are nice, depending on which one you live in. The most popular dorm is Turner Hall, but it isn’t necessarily the nicest dorm hall. Most of the athletes live in Turner Hall, and it is also the largest dorm. Other nice dorms are Nichols, Owen, and Shubert halls. The new Rendezvous Center is expected to have extremely nice living conditions for its tenants.

Dorms are dorms in my opinion: always loud, experimental, and like living in a Motel 6 for months!

I would recommend dorm living for all incoming students for at least a semester. If nothing else, it will expose you to the vast differences that exist on campus. Turner Hall is the main, tower-style dorm. Any of the South Complex dorms will have a more intimate setting with fewer people around.

Did You Know?

Gravely Hall, now home to the political science department, was once a girls’ dormitory back in the day. Girls used to sunbathe out on the roof. There are rumors that the building is actually haunted, but those are probably just rumors, right?
