Parking Permits

Parking lots are broken up into “reserved” and “general” parking. The general lots are always hard to find a space in. The reserved are not as bad because students do not want to pay that much for a permit. Any student can apply for and purchase a permit at Public Safety.

College Prowler Take

Parking is not a happy topic on the ISU campus. Student drivers are constantly complaining about the parking situation. There are 3,000 available parking spots for 13,977 students. Obviously, the numbers do not match up very well. Residential street parking can be the best way to go if you are trying to park before nine in the morning. Any time after this hour—good luck! The Holt Arena has a free parking area, but it is not convenient for students on lower campus. Parking passes are available and do help. Most students buy the general parking permit. These lots are easier to park in than street parking, but do not count on finding that perfect spot up front. Students are definitely awaiting that wonderful day when the administration will announce the building of a parking garage. Parking is not as bad as it seems for some students. These students choose to either get a bike, walk, or park in lots close to campus and head out on foot. Many students try to live as close to campus as they can for this reason. All buildings on campus are quite close and in easy walking distance of each other. It does get cold in the winter, so bring a coat and head off to class a few minutes early. Although parking can be a pain, students have found ways around it by going to school the old way—through the three feet of snow on foot!

I don’t drive, but I have noticed that if you have an early class then parking should be no trouble at all. As the day goes on, the parking lots fill up quickly. I would recommend getting a bicycle and using that during the warm months. It is easy and helps you stay in shape!

The parking on campus is horrible. It is extremely hard to find a parking space before class. I have to come 30 minutes early to find a space and get to class on time. It’s a huge waste of my time that I should spend studying.
