Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

ISU is what someone might call one of a kind. It has the city setting without actually being in a huge city. It is an institution with diverse programs, qualified professors, and a field of interest for any student. And although it is an Idaho university with an Idaho environment, out-of-state and international students are welcome and included. There is a club or student organization for everybody, and if that isn’t your cup of tea, there is always the great Idaho outdoors to enjoy. ISU has a wonderful hometown feel with multiple opportunities available. The student experience at ISU, and probably any college or university, really comes down to what the student wants out of it. Pocatello can be viewed as an amazingly boring town, or it can be a fun, chill place to just lay back and enjoy life. That is definitely the word for Pocatello and ISU life in general—chill. For the most part, students and professors are laid-back and easy-going. The ISU experience is what students make of it, but most likely that experience will be one of great memories and good times in good ol’ Idaho.

Bad

If I could do it all over again, I would choose another school. ISU screws just about everything up! From over charging you to giving you a ticket (which you don't have to pay) because your PASS was covered by your sunshade. They make the teachers pay for bus passes to get down to Pocatello to teach, no one knows how to run anything and the programs are always screwed up. Plus, they try to get money out of you every way imaginable: Teachers pay for parking and bus passes, making visitors buy a parking pass, making you pay for an Bengal card (the first one is free, I'll give them credit for that)or you can't take anything out of the library or use the computers for school there. That should all be INCLUDED in the tuition! Making you take all the courses called "generals" to make an extra few thousand dollars a student. (They add new courses every few years) Plus they say they are running out of money so they don't print the students homework or syllabuses anymore. They make the student do it before class but they'll turn around and remodel something. The books are a complete rip off. They charge $200 dollars for a "ISU edition" of a certain book when you can find that EXACT same book online for $50. The difference? The math problems were in a different order or a word was changed here or there. When you go to sell it back, either they won't take it or they give you $20 for it and then turn around and sell it for $150. Most of the teachers are nice--lazy, but nice. There are a few who are complete idiots and teach crap that has nothing to do with the subject the student signed up for. ISU make you retake classes even though you are beyond the level. E.g. You take Spanish 300 and you pass with a B. You didn't take Spanish 101 but they will make you retake it or you won't be accepted into their programs. Obviously the student DID NOT need to take 101!!!! I'm trying to think of some good things...quite a few of the teachers are open minded and respect your opinions and beliefs, it's a cheap school (tuition wise, NOT counting tickets, buying passes etc.) and at least you get an education. But going through all that to get a two year degree...?? I'm still not sure I did the right thing.

C Is for Change

This year was mediocre for Idaho State University. So many people are worried about what is going to happen after college that they didnt invest their time in the college itself. Most people in student leadership seemed to just want the position for resume boosting. This next year though seems a tad bit more encouraging in student leadership as well as quality of campus resources.
