Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Illinois State University holds a dear place in most of its students' hearts, due to the care and help the University provided them along the way. ISU wants to see all of its students succeed and does its best to make that happen. Therefore, the University equips students with learning tools so they can become their very best. ISU is home to some of the most proficient and helpful professors, and the relationship between teacher and student is one that has been praised. Students know their professors care about them, and professors know how important real-life advice is to students. The students have the will to learn, and the teachers provide the necessary tools for the real world after college. This relationship is very powerful, and one of the main reasons students would recommend ISU over any other college.

The University also helps with available internship opportunities and career advice, which is what makes ISU different from many other colleges. When students graduate, they are able to fill up their resume with corresponding professional experience they maintained while attending classes. The Career Center also provides students with real-world advice by hosting mock interviews that allow students to know what employers are looking for when they hire people. There are a number of career and internship fairs that let students hand out their resumes to potential employers and also allow students to see what kind of opportunities are out there. The University encourages each student to grow as an individual, and students flourish at the fact that they are treated like young professionals rather than children. From the outside, ISU may seem like the typical state school, but once you are here, you realize the unique character it possesses. Students are proud to say that they are from Illinois State University.

WIND WIND WIND

I'm from a suburb of Chicago so coming to ISU was nothing new for me. I knew that the winters would be bitterly cold, and that there would be a lot of snow. What I couldn't prepare myself for was the wind. I don't know what it is about BloNo, but it is ridiculously windy (especially in the spring). When I would check the weather, I would be pleased if I saw that the wind would only be 20 mph that day, as opposed to 35.

Hardly Any Diversity

There was pretty much no diversity at ISU. It seemed like it was mostly white students and then much smaller percentages of other races tossed in. During my time here, I don't think I ever met a single international student. Not only that, I think I met maybe one person that wasn't from Illinois. I felt like everyone fell into the same categories, myself included. I had looked forward to meeting unique and new people in college.

Lacking School Spirit

The newly constructed rec center is VERY nice, but usually overcrowded. It can be hard to get a machine during certain times of the day. However, as far as sports goes, there is an extreme lack in school spirit.
