Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It is evident that there is not a large mix of ethnicities walking along the sidewalks of the quad in between classes. Most students that attend ISU are either from the suburbs of Chicago or rural Illinois. Although there is little diversity among the student body, ISU strives to offer a supportive and diverse environment with help from the Office of Equal Opportunity, Ethics & Access. This office is responsible for monitoring the policies of the University. There is also a Diversity Advocacy unit that helps underrepresented students by providing them with cultural experiences, diversity education, and student development. There are a number of awards and scholarships offered to students who demonstrate an impact on the campus community.

There are also many registered student organizations that focus on diversity, such as the Black Student Union (BSU) and People Realizing Individuality and Diversity through Education (PRIDE). There is a large community of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) students (along with student allies) that provide assistance to students in need. Not only are there a large number of churches both on and off campus, but there are also a large number of religious groups that meet, such as campus ministries and Campus Crusades for Christ. No matter what diversity issue intrigues you, there is something for everyone at ISU.

Jersey Shore...Meet ISU

Diversity on this campus does exist but not in strong numbers. Especially on the weekends and at night, the guido wanna-bes crawl out of hiding. This college campus is sometimes known to be a party college and that because 90% of the people here act like they are fist pumping with the MTV Jersey Shore cast. The truth is though in any of your classes you will find a ton of student of all ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds. Illinois State University has clubs for all types of diverse group such as LGBT clubs, Asian and Latino Heritage clubs, and African American Sororities and Fraternities. Also located in our student center is both a list and hanging are all flags representing the countries of our students.

Acceptance at ISU

There are different races/religions and orientations on campus. I have never felt the student body as a whole put any negativity or unacceptance towards any students. There are also plenty of opportunities on campus to expand your knowledge of the subject or meet others with the same views as you.

Diversity at ISU?

There are different races, ethnicities, and religions at ISU, yet not nearly the diversity that may be found in a larger city. Students are predominately white, yet I have not observed much lack of acceptance of those of other races.

Facts

Gay Pride

ISU is very respectful of sexual orientation, and most students at ISU accept everyone for who they are and do not discriminate. There is a large gay community around ISU that offers support to students that need it. People Realizing Individuality and Diversity through Education (PRIDE) is one of the student organizations that helps to educate the campus on diversity.

Political Activity

The campus is generally a liberal campus, and many political parties keep to themselves. However, ISU does have student organizations, such as the College Democrats and the College Republicans, that spread their views around campus.

Economic Status

Many ISU students hail from the suburbs of Chicago, so the economic status is mostly middle class. Generally, economic status is not an issue on campus, as it's difficult to tell where a student is from based on appearance.

Most Common Religions

Christianity is the most common religion on campus, and students are able to find many student organizations that have religious affiliations. Many of their activities are publicized on campus, but it is not overbearing. At times, though, a variety of religious leaders protest on the quad.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are a few well-known minority clubs, such as the Black Student Union, Association of Latin American Students, and Asian Pacific American Coalition. There are also a few sororities and fraternities dedicated to different cultures.
