Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Illinois State University is not unlike the typical college where people meet outside of class and have random relationships. Females outnumber males at ISU, but it is difficult for girls to find guys that want to have a relationship rather than a one-night stand. There is a mix of people, some of which who came to college already in a relationship and others not looking to have a serious relationship. It is very rare to see someone start a relationship with the person he or she hooked up with previously. A strategic way to meet people is through friends or classes.

Bars and nightlife are huge at ISU and that is where many guys and girls meet. Alcohol plays a role as an inhibitor and allows people to make decisions involving sex. More people go out when the weather is nice, so it is easier to meet someone during the spring and fall. It is not uncommon to see girls lounging in their bikinis on the quad or shirtless guys playing football in front of their apartments. ISU has some very attractive people, and they are not afraid to admit it, nor are they afraid to show it off.

Variety at ISU

There is a huge variety of guys and girls at ISU. You can tell by the way people dress, the clubs/activities they are associated with or the types of other people they are with. Personally, there is a lack of males with my style and views.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

ISU's social scene is one of the University's perks. No matter what social group you are a part of, there is always something to do. It is also a perk to be a guy because of the abundance of girls at ISU. It is no secret what most students like to do on the weekends, and that is party. Even though ISU is not nationally ranked as a party school, students here know how to have a good time. During the day, the quad is the place to be. Students lounge on the grass, or play football, Frisbee, or bags. You will not find many students locked up in their dorm rooms or apartments when the sun is shining.

Hookups or Relationships?

While many may be in relationships, there is also a large pool of random hookups that occur on campus. Commitment-free hookups are easy to find if that is what you’re looking for. Many of these hookups are alcohol-induced and may continue for a time as commitment-free. It is widely known that incoming freshmen already in a relationship before coming to ISU will break it off before Thanksgiving break.

Dress Code

Hoodies and sweatpants are generally what is seen on the quad on the way to class. Many students do not take the time to dress up for class. At times, you may see an overzealous student trying to make an impression in class, and they generally will be wearing brands like Forever 21 or Abercrombie & Fitch. It is also common during the first few weeks of school to see freshman girls looking as if they are ready to go out on the town. However, after a few concerned looks, the going-out attire gets put back in the closet, and hoodies make their welcomed appearance.
