Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Safety is a top priority at Illinois State University. Whenever any safety issue is reported, students receive a crime report through their e-mail accounts. This crime report details the incident and provides tips on how to get out of bad situations. This ensures that students are adequately informed on safety issues that happen throughout campus. There are also blue-light emergency phones located all around campus that signal the ISU Police Department when pushed; police will reach the emergency within three minutes. The Student Government Association implemented the Students on Patrol (STOP) program, which allows students to walk around campus checking locked doors and making sure security lights are working. Recently, a new program has been implemented called Safe Walk, which allows students to walk home with others late at night.

Health is also very important at Illinois State University. Students are supplied with insurance or can visit Student Health Services (SHS) if they are sick. There are also many other medical services at SHS, including women’s health, psychiatric services, preventative medicine like immunizations and allergy injections, laboratory tests, and X-rays. The people who work at SHS are helpful and patient; another helpful aspect is the pharmacy that allows students to purchase cheaper medicine. Students can either call the office to make an appointment or go online. When checking in, students are required to swipe their Redbird Card. Overall, SHS is there for any student who needs some TLC (tender loving care).

Average Safety

I'm from a small town in which no one ever locks their doors. So moving to a larger school to live was a shock for me, but safety has never been an issue. I have never felt unsafe on campus. There are emergency buttons throughout campus and it seems like there's always someone on the quad, even walking home from work at 10:30 some nights. In the dorms it's super safe. You have to have your key and an ID to get in after midnight. NO WORRIES :)

Usually Feel Safe.

I don't ever really feel unsafe at ISU. The only time I feel unsafe is when I'm walking alone at night, but they offer a service that has someone come and escort you back so it's okay. Whenever there are crime advisories they send an email and they text you so you know exactly what's going on at all times. They also have safety stations where you can press a button and the police will be there in 90 seconds. I never feel unsafe at ISU.

Illinois State's Security

Illinois State takes pride in their security. They take special measure such as sending students weekly announcements of any crime in the area, as well as checking for keys and id's before entering any building after 12am. It allows students to feel safe and taken care of.

Did You Know? ISU provides a bus service for late nights called NiteRide, which gives ISU students the option of taking a bus instead of walking around campus late at night. It runs from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week.
