There are metered spaces, pay lots, and commuter lots that students can park in, but students need to make sure they are allowed to park there. Hourly parking is available in pay lots such as the Bone Center and College of Business. After 10 p.m., parking is free. Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Visitors, faculty, and students alike will always have trouble finding a parking space. The exception is when lucky faculty members spend large sums of money to purchase reserved spots (this option is only available to faculty and staff). Parking is the biggest complaint on the ISU campus. Street parking is students' best option since it is free for 24 hours and not too far from campus, but spots fill up quickly in the morning and stay in use until late at night.

There are also metered spots that students can park in, but since they are hourly and some classes last 75 minutes, students risk getting a parking ticket or spending a lot of money for the meter. If students purchase a permit, they are allowed to park in certain lots coordinated by color; student lots are green and faculty lots are red. The ISU Police are very strict and will not hesitate to give parking tickets. And beware: parking tickets add up, and by the end of the semester, students will not be able to register for classes if they have outstanding fines.

Parking Tips for Commuters at ISU

A few things I've learned: Parking is dependant on time of day. Commuters with early morning classes will find close parking spots (5-10 min walk) easily. Later in the day it is much more difficult to find spots and wither the walk will be much longer or some lots have a shuttle option. Parking permits for a year cost around 90 dollars, and if you forget to display your permit you can be sure the parking enforcement officers with find out.

Plenty of Parking to Go Around

I think parking is practically everywhere. When my family and friends come down to see me, we find parking very quickly. Parking on campus doesn't seem too much of a hassle. When I walk around and see other students parking their car to get to class, they manage to find a parking space. I really think that parking isn't hard to come by.

Getting a Parking Permit

In order to buy a parking permit, students need to go to the Office of Parking and Transportation; they will need their ISU student ID and the make/model/license plate number of the car they will be driving. Anyone can buy a parking permit; it just depends on how much you want to pay to park. Some lots are closer to campus than others. Students living far off campus usually buy commuter permits to park in the green lots. Most freshmen are forced into buying a permit for the lot that is farthest from campus because upperclassmen purchase the better permits ahead of time. Luckily, a bus provides transportation to the far lot. Even if you are willing to pay a high fee, permits run out fast.
