Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The weather in Bloomington-Normal is typical of the Midwest. In August, around the beginning of the school year, ISU is still in the hot stage, and most people wear shorts and tanks to class. As fall approaches, people start to wear more sweats or casual looks. Winter brings the cold weather and the heavy, warm coats. Snow removal on the quad is taken care of in a timely manner by the University, but it is recommended that students still wear snow boots and bundle up. The University is pretty lenient when it comes to winter weather and understands that students do not want to walk to class through a blizzard or when it is negative 20 degrees outside, so occasionally, the University will have a snow day. Also, a lot of professors commute to work and might even cancel class even when the University doesn't.

Spring is the time of year when students start to migrate outside and hang out on the quad. Every day is around 50 degrees, and the whole town seems vibrant. Students are either excited the weather is getting nicer or happy that school is coming to a close. Students that stay at ISU through the summer months enjoy a hot and humid summer, when the temperature can hover around 90 degrees! Luckily, for these students, there are a number of water parks throughout Bloomington-Normal that offer discounts to students with a valid ID.

WIND WIND WIND

I'm from a suburb of Chicago so coming to ISU was nothing new for me. I knew that the winters would be bitterly cold, and that there would be a lot of snow. What I couldn't prepare myself for was the wind. I don't know what it is about BloNo, but it is ridiculously windy (especially in the spring). When I would check the weather, I would be pleased if I saw that the wind would only be 20 mph that day, as opposed to 35.

Wind

Walking out of watterson towers it is a huge wind tunnel. And when it rains it is even worse. Since classes rarely get cancelled it is sometimes hard to get to class.

Campus at Winter Time

I would say the streets are usually plowed, but sometimes the sidewalks never get plowed at all. Boots are a must when walking to class because you have to be prepared to trek through a foot of snow sometimes.
