Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics at IWU live in the minds and imaginations of the fans, more so than in any real competition. There is a rich history of rivalries and professional stars that started out as Titans, stories of great players and quiet lessons. Retired basketball coach Denny Bridges is a campus legend. He’s still involved with the athletics department, but only plays a small role. He led the Wesleyan basketball squad to the finals a few years in a row and finally won the national championship. Since then, basketball has remained the pride and joy of Illinois Wesleyan. The crowd involvement brings the excitement from the floor into the stands and creates a frenzy. Football is the second most exciting sport on campus, but doesn’t generate as much attention.

Athletics aren’t an essential part of campus life, but this isn’t a Big 10 school. We don’t have any national television coverage, office pools, or big bowl games deciding the funding of our athletic program. Professional sports are actually much more popular on campus than anything. The same can’t be said about the current state of IWU athletics. Many students are involved in the varsity sports, but even more take part in recreational and intramural games. This relaxed attitude toward sports emphasizes the role of academics and other student interests.

Lame

If you are looking for fun college sports, tailgating, and rivalry, do not come here. I have been to like one football game in all 3 years here and not a single basketball game and I am not out of the ordinary. I go to a lot of soccer games but that is because I know a lot of people of the teams and used to play myself. Sports are absolutely not a priority here unless you are actually on the team.

Football games aren't that...

Football games aren't that popular, but basketball is better. Most of the teams do pretty well, but there isn't a ton of school spirit.

Most Popular Sports

Basketball is by far the most popular sport at IWU. The games are exciting, and students really play up the rivalries. Football games are less intense, but the atmosphere is always festive. Football games have a more back-to-school traditional feel, while students and players alike come to party at the basketball games.

Most Overlooked Teams

The most overlooked teams at IWU are the tennis squads. They play consistently but get no recognition. Such is the life of those that walk the beaten path.

School Spirit

School spirit is strong in name only. Lots of people, athletes and non-athletes, wear IWU athletic brand clothing. Lots of people participate in the Homecoming activities. Students here even refer to Illinois State (ISU) as “I Screwed Up,” they’re so proud to be at IWU. But not as many students support the actual teams. This isn’t evident at the events because the facilities can only accommodate a portion of the student body. Regardless, it’d be nice to know everyone cared as much about the rest of the school.

Getting Tickets

Tickets to football games are free for Wesleyan students and alumni. Basketball games are first come, first served, with discounted prices for students with an ID.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The Constitution Trail is only a few blocks from campus. The trail winds across Bloomington-Normal, through neighborhoods, downtown areas, school districts, and even as far east as the airport. The Trail is lined with shade trees and is perfect for walks, runs, biking, and rollerblading.
