IWU is not very racially diverse because an overwhelming number of the students are white. That isn’t to say that the school isn’t diverse. There are students from all over the world and from all walks of life. In the same classroom, you might encounter a basketball player from inner-city Detroit, a violinist from Maine, an exchange student from the mountains of Nepal, and an artist from Bulgaria. What Wesleyan lacks in racial diversity it can account for in diverse lifestyle differences. Students have many individual interests and hobbies and tend to associate along those lines as opposed to ethnic groups.
The IWU community is also generally very accepting of people’s sexual preferences. Gay students are outspoken and well-recognized on campus. For as many white suburbanites that go to school here, it’s impossible not to meet some interesting and unique people. Additionally, the University can only be blamed for a lack of diversification to a certain extent. IWU can only admit as many minorities as apply, and even then, they are still held to the same standard as everyone else. The IWU student population reflects national averages regarding diversity, so to that extent, it is on par with the rest of the nation’s schools.

IWUPA is the on-campus activist voice for gendered equality. The gay and lesbian community is strongly supported, and nearly all professors take part in the Safety Zone program, in which a rainbow sticker designates an area on campus free of prejudice.
College Democrats and College Republicans stage debates to coincide with ongoing political battles in the news. Student Senate holds elections each year, in which students partition the student body with proposals for change during the school year.
The large majority of students come from the suburbs of Chicago. Most students on campus are middle to upper class.
The most prominent religion on campus is Christianity. Most students do not affiliate with any one faith exclusively. Multi-faith services are held at Evelyn Chapel, as well as seasonal holiday celebrations.
The Latin American club, CLASE, sponsors Nuyorican poetry readings and a Mariachi Ball. The South Asian Student Association sponsors a Cricket Tournament every spring. The Black Student Union holds a poetry slam and Mixer early in the year. These events are highly attended and attract students of all races and ethnicities.
